I called my doc today because I was having a major PCOS freakout. I asked about fertility drugs. I am just facing too many things that can get much worse as I age. The hypothyroidism gets worse with pregnancy, PCOS gets worse as you age and my husbands MFI (male factor infertility) is fine now, but we don't even know how it came to get better, so it could get worse again just as easily.

I expect AF this Fri or Sat, and then next week I will get an HSG and start Clomid. Then, pending a clean HSG, I go in for monitoring, and we will have our first IUI! I cannot believe this is all happening within the next few weeks!!

I really didn't want to go as far as Clomid, but TTC with these fertility problems is so much harder then it looks. It adds another level of emotion and panic to TTC, and I seriously can't just do this for months and months. If Clomid and IUI are unsuccessful twice, I will feel better about taking a little break. But right now with my cycles being what they are (I am on CD 41!), I do not feel like I can continue to wait and wait to take more invasive measures, and still be successful and functional in other areas of my life. Plus, my symptoms have been getting steadily worse over the last year, and even though I am on the new meds, I don't want to push this off too long.

And please for anyone who prays, PLEASE PRAY that I do NOT end up like Jon and Kate Plus 8 (for those that know the TV show). Our situations are almost the same. She too had PCOS, took Clomid and had an IUI. The risk for multiples is supposed to be 7-10%, but I do ovulate on my own, eventually. I will be monitored though, so hopefully I can avoid multiples. I just don't want to have to face a reduction.

I hope this is the right decision! Wait till I tell DH, Ha! (He doesn't know yet the doc has ok'ed the IUI and Clomid for next cycle). Ahhhh, I am nervous!!

Thank you!

I just told DH and his reaction was, "Uh, Okay!". I asked if he was ok about the risk of multiples, and he said it seemed low enough. Then I told him that Clomid can give you lots of side effects like super bad PMS and he says, "What!? Great! I will be working a lot that week!" I tend to have bad PMS as it is But he is as always supportive and excited to be a dad!

Good Luck. I have my HSG scheduled for tomorrow at 7am, and this is my second round of clomid. I haven't really had any bad side effects yet. (Ok, maybe bad cramps CD 1 and then a heavy flow for me CD 2, but that is it.) I don't remember being overly emotional, but maybe you should ask my DH if that is true.

So Kate was on clomid and got IUI. I was wondering what fertility treatments she got. She said on one show I watched that it almost guaranteed multiples, so I didn't think that was what it was. I kinda think that is where we are heading too, and that really scares me if it was clomid that made her ovulate (at least) 6 eggs. My doctor told me she has only had three women she put on clomid have twins, and they were (oddly enough) all in the same year. She has never had triplets with it. Of course I don't know how many have had IUI.

Well, I think maybe she overstimed on a high dose of Clomid and was not properly monitored. Or my source is wrong and she was on injectibles. But all those media multiples that used fertility drugs used IUI since IUI doesn't control how many eggs are fertilized. It is kinda scary. I also think she may have had so many because she assumed that she was just as infertile as ever, but in reality many are more fertile after having babies and some women's infertility improves. But that is just an opinion. Also, I think it is very different depending on if you never ovulate versus if you do ovulate on your own. I dunno though, it would make me feel better if she in fact was on injectibles!

Good luck with the HSG. I haven't had one before. My doc gave me a Valium to take beforehand and told me to drink lots of water because it hurts more when you are dehydrated.

Good luck, Michelle! How exciting!

A few weeks ago on Jon and Kate Plus Eight, they said that she did do IUI with the sextuplets. Jon was explaining the difference between that and IVF. Hopefully it won't happen to you!

Woot! Time for drugs!

Okay I think I remember watching Jon & Kate when they had a question and answer episode and I don't think she was on Clomid. I would have remembered that. I think it was Pergonal and IUI but I'm not positive. The IUI isn't what will make you have lots of babies, it's whatever drug is making you produce lots of follicles.

From J&K's website: "I was told I had 3 with a possibility of 4 follicles, and that was a great cycle!"
Somehow she got 7 babies though (1 never made it) so I think maybe she wasn't being followed very well?

I've heard the risk if triplets on Clomid is less than 1%. Still, I'll say a prayer that you don't end up with too many babies all at once.

Yes, it all has to do with being monitored well. I have heard of IUI cycles being converted to IVF because there are too many follicles and the risk of multiples is too high. So it's either convert to IVF or cancel the cycle and reduce the injectables so that hopefully you don't make as many follies. Good luck girl!
