Were you named after someone? Was your name popular at the time? Did your parents just picked something they liked? Here we all are, going through that process, and I was just wondering if there's any influence from how your parents did it...
I think that my first name, Jessica, was sort of taken from the Allman Brothers song, and my parents just liked it. (I was actually Niki Lynn until the day I was born, though.) My middle name is from someone's maid...everyone just liked the name Paige. My sister's name origin is more definite. When my mom would put my brother and me down for a nap, she'd watch soap operas. I heard a name over and over and I guess I called her that before they even knew she was a girl. Meghan. Hehe.
For my brother, everyone wanted him to be named after my dad--everyone, that is, but my dad and mom. My grandmother desperately wanted something biblical, too. My parents did not, but ended up with it anyway--Joshua Adam. VERY biblical, don't you think?
Both sides of our family have very set opinions on what constitutes a good name and what makes a bad name. Therefore, we will never, ever tell anyone the name until the baby is born. WOOOHOOO!!!
Poor DH. His brother, sister, and he are named after family members--famous and not. DH had 4 names total when he was born. At 14, HIS PARENTS decided to change his name!!! And then one more time until he has one middle name and neither of the originals. The really sad part? DH and I are BOTH changing our last names. Hehehe. It's going to look like he's on the run!

My mom has a sister that's 13 months older than her. They both had their first 2 kids within months of each other. My mom had 2 girls , my aunt had 2 boys. 2 years later my mom had me (my aunt only had the 3). My mom was convinced I was a boy and my aunt thought I was a girl. My mom told her if it was "another girl" then my aunt could name me. so she did, and she gave me her middle name. And my oldest niece has our middle name too.

Well my dad always wanted a little girl and he wanted to name her Donna - he had a niece with that name and loved it. He had to wait 15 years from the birth of his first and have three boys before he got me - his birthday was 4/7 and I was born 4/9 (two days after his birthday - cool huh?). My mom got to pick my middle name (that is how they worked it - one would pick the first name and the other would pick the middle name) - it is Marie, named after her mother - my grandma's name was Mary, but my mom didn't like Donna Mary, so she changed it to Marie.
It is funny because everyone in my family has at least one name (either first or middle) after someone in our family, except my brother Pat - he was the last of the boys, so I guess they ran out of names of family members they wanted to honor

Ok, my name is Rodolfita. And I got this name from my uncle. He was so close to my dad, they were best brothers. Anyways, his name was Rodolfo. And he would tell my mom and dad to name the baby after him. If I were a boy, to name me Rodolfo and call my Rudy, or if I'm a girl to name me Rodolfa, or Rodolfita. My parents didn't like that name. hehehe. Anyways, like a month before or a couple of days before I was born, my uncle was killed, he was shot at a bar fight. Well, he jumped before my dad, because they were aiming at him. He saved my dads life, so they decided to name me Rodolfita. I don't think I've ever heard of anybody being named Rodolfita. Anyways, I kinda like it better than Maria. That's the name my mom would have named me. I don't like the name Maria. My mom is Maria Guadalupe, and her sister is Maria De Los Angeles, and my older sister (who passed when she was born) was Maria. So, I'd prefer to be named Rodolfita than Maria.

Rodi-that is a great name story...it sounds like a book. I was supposed to be Sherry Lynn (uck...I am SO not a Sherry Lynn) until the day I was born. Apparently my mom looked at me and said. No, She looks like a Dawn. Oh, and her best friend's name was Dawn but she insists I am not named for her. Of course they had a falling out when I was little so she could be saying that just because she doesn't like her.

Awwww...you guys have such good stories for your names!!! It makes me wonder what we'll do for naming a baby.
Amanda, be careful of being so displeased with "just liking the name"!!! That might very well be what DH and I do. It's what we have so far, anyway. That, and a middle name after my mom's stepdad's last name. We'll wait until a kid is older to explain that...hehe.

Aw, that's so sweet! We adopted the nurse who delivered me as another grandmother. It's nice to know that traditions and gestures like that still exist!

Well, this post is a couple days old, but I thought it was cute!
Anyway, I was supposed to be Brian Tyler Junior My parents were told I was supposed to be a boy (another reason why I wouldn't necessarily trust the ultrasound anyway). Since I was a girl, they chose something completely different with no meaning to it whatsoever. Jacqueline Rae. And my mother chose to spell it the french way, even though we're not french And to top it off, my maiden name was really long, so in total, I had 26 letters in my name. It never fit on any forms or credit cards or anything. My sister was named Carla, after our grandfather Carl.

Hehehehe...that's cute! Your parent were just pissed with the wrong results and threw something out there!
26 letters?! Ho-ly CRAP! I always felt sorry for the people who couldn't fit their full names on things. I'm even a little peeved when I'm not allowed to put my full middle name on something because they want M.I. only!
So, short names for your kids, I take it?

LOL As dumb as this is going to sound, I hadn't really thought about it! My married last name has 6 letters less than my maiden name, so I've already got a head start
