I am seriously proud of myself because I am a beginner when it comes to sewing. Seriously, I broke two sewing machine needles earlier this week trying to sew a pillow...lol.
So, I want to cloth diaper when we have a baby and I had ordered my only diaper in excellent used condition. I'm totally in love with cloth diapers now. Anyhow, I know you can make your own and I had downloaded a pattern to use, but figured I wouldn't be able to sew a diaper.
So, tonight, I set out working on making a diaper. I combined some things and did my best and this is how it turned out. You can see where I fought with my sewing machine and where my stitches show beginning sewing, but I wanted to share because I am so freaking proud of myself!!!
Thanks for looking.
Tami
In the pictures below, it's not really crooked ( I don't think) , it's just how it was sitting with the elastic when I took the picture. I didn't straighten it out.

awww - thanks. We'll see when I take this on again. I spent a couple of hours on this because I'm slow...and my sewing machine and I had a few fights. I won.

I know what you mean...I haven't wrestled with my sewing machine in awhile - but you may inspire me to get back to it!

Thanks ladies. I'm still pretty proud of myself, even though I have found more flaws in it this morning. I really didn't think I would get it done. I might try to make another one tonight and see if I can do better...lol. I'm not holding my breath!

Wow, you're an inspiration! I have big plans to make all of my own cloth diapers, but don't even own a sewing machine yet! I guess I should get started practicing! lol
Thanks of sharing that! How long did it take you to make? What part what the hardest?

Wow! I am sewing challenged...but that makes me what to try again! I might have to look for a pattern and try my hand at it. Great job!

I found the pattern in the cloth diaper forum under the sticky for making your own cloth diapers. It's a newborn diaper. The hard part was the whole thing! Remember, when I say I'm a beginner, I mean that. I have only sewn pillows (recently and broke two needles), a small purse, two sets of curtains, and the diaper. It took me several hours, but the prep is the most time. I had to trace and cut the patterns and look at the directions to sew it, etc. I think now that I have done one, I could do it much quicker this go around. Thanks again ladies!

That is soooo cool. I'd LOVE to do something like that but I have never really sewed.
Be sure and post pics of any others you make.
Oh and just curious, how much did the materials to make one diaper cost?

It's VERY basic NEWBORN fitted diaper, so lemme think. I can get four panels of newborn pattern out of half a yard of flannel at $1.50. I used two panels of the flannel - one for outside and one for inside with the soaker sewn to it. The same amount of cuttings with the fleece, at $2.22 for half a yard. I used one panel of fleece. The soaker was made from microfiber towels at $2.96 for two towels. I cut the towels in half and was able to get a contoured double soaker out of one half. So, basically, I can get 4 double soakers out of that. The thread was $.97 and the elastic was no roll and it was $.97. The velcro was $6. I think I can get probably many diapers out of that.
Double microfiber soaker $.74
Flannel $.75
Fleece $.56
Thread $.10 (estimate used)
Elastic $.14 (estimate used)
Velcro $1 (estimate)
Grand total for one diaper $ 3.29
WOW! I wouldn't have added that up if you didn't ask me...lol!!
I'm going to attempt to make a larger fitted tomorrow for a friend to try out. We'll see how that one goes...lol!!
