Thumbs way up I sign constantly with my niece when I'm around her. She loves to watch it and is very good at picking up new signs now that she's 19 months. It's the cutest thing when a baby signs for the first time. Their little hands are adorable. They can understand language way before they can verbally communicate. That can lead to lots of frustration and screaming. It's amazing how quickly signing can alleviate some of that. My SIL is also deaf, so we'll be teaching our children ASL signs and not baby signs. I learned sign language so I could speak with her and I want our children to be able to communicate with her as well.

Thumbs up! My brother and SIL did some baby signs with my niece when she was little and I think it helped them to communicate with her.

I had one semester of what my unversity called Manually Coded English. Most of the signs were the same as ASL, but there were some differences. ASL has it's own word order that can be very different from English. I use ASL signs, but don't sign ASL. I would need to take ASL classes and spend a lot of time in the deaf community to be able to sign ASL. DH is better as ASL, but not fluent. His sister lost all of her hearing at 3 from meningitis and has signed since she was 4. She didn't sign ASL until she chose to go away to a deaf school her sophomore year of HS.

Wow. I know our local community colleges offer classes in ASL, but I hear it's extremely difficult. I had a great aunt that was deaf, but I didn't grow up around her, so I haven't ever seen anyone communicate with her. However, I do love to watch the interpreters during our district wide meetings and what not for those that are deaf in our district. I'm amazed at how quickly the can move their hands. Thanks for sharing.

Thumbs up. We will be doing this with our next. It will be great to be able to understand them before they are vocal.

Thumbs up. I would love to have the kids learn that and ASL as well. Deafness runs in the family and I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Thumb sideways...although I did take a year of sign language as an elective when I was a senior in high school. It was interesting, but I barely remember anything 11 years later

Up! AJ does some signs - it is how we started trying to get him to communicate more. He will now say and do the sign for "out"!
ETA: I started teaching AJ ASL - I got a book from the library to pick up some of them and then I got some resource websites out of it too!
