I have 2 friends that are pregnant right now. One of them is due next month, so I had to go buy a shower gift. The other just found out, but with both of her other children, I bought her a pregnancy calendar, so I wanted to buy her another one.

So, I went to Bo Bebe (it's a Canadian baby boutique), and picked up a bunch of baby stuff for the shower gift (ranging in 0-6 months for age of use), and the pregnancy calendar. The guy at the counter starts to ring through my purchase, and is scanning the shower gifts and asked me how old my baby was. I told him it was for a gift. Now you'd think he'd realize from that, that he shouldn't make such assumptions. Nope. He gets to the calendar and asks me how far along I am! I'm sorry, do I freakin look pregnant?! I mean, I guess it's winter, and I was wearing a big coat, but isn't that a little rude to ask anyway? I was really upset when I left the store. It was hard enough going in there and buying a bunch of baby stuff that is not for me, without having an ignorant @ss for a salesman!

People can be clods. I've heard more insulting things...

For example, I have a "surprise" baby that came along later in life. I had a lady who looked at least my age or older call out in a parking lot: "Are you his grandmother? You look tired!" !!!

If I am ever unsure as to the relationship a woman has to a baby she's holding (or if she's pregnant, heavy, or just wearing baggy clothing), I say nothing. That salesman should have kept it zipped, too.

I never think of good comebacks in time, tough...

Thats not right the sales man shouldnt be so nosy it has nothing to do with him why or who you buying the gifts for. He needs to do his job properly. Should complain to his manager sorry you had to go thru all that. I would be upset to.

I can't believe that woman said that to you! What did you say? Was she embarassed?

I know, I never think of good comebacks either. Even if I could have come up with one, I don't think I should have to share my struggles with fertility with a stranger just to get him to shut up. I tried sharing with my MIL and it didn't make her be quiet!

I guess it's not his fault that I'm feeling this way about ttc and everything, but I would have thought he'd have learned his lesson with the first question. To make matters worse, I think he was the owner/manager. And, he was training a girl who seemed to get very embarassed and walked away when he kept asking me questions.

Maybe it's not his fault that you feel this way about TTC, but it certainly IS his fault that he's a jack@ss! I think that some people simply have no social grace. How terrible for you! I hope you did tell him that you noticed something yourself about him. You know, they have legit sex reassignment surgeries for that now so they wouldn't have to chop off your man parts to make boobs anymore.

I'm angry for you. Hehe. Sorry.

Actually, Jaquie, after I said no, I'm his mother, THEN she added the tired remark.

The funny thing is, all my life people have mistaken me for younger than I am. I don't think I look like a grannie YET. It was humbling, to say the least.

I just tried to chalk it up to people's ignorance. But, I can see why you felt badly in your own situation.
