Hi girls
I figured I would put a copy of the PM here incase anyone else is curious about IUI and injectables. Here ya go.... sorry if it is all over the place. We are having teenager drama here tonight
GRRRR
I did Menopur/ Bravelle injections. I did the CD 5-14 if I remember right. (I would have to look it up for exact days and doses)
On CD 3 I went in for a baseline u/s. They basically take a look at your ovaries and check the lining. If all looks good they will start you on the meds.
I started on CD5 with 2 vials or Menopur a day for around 5 days...I think.
They did bloodwork to check the E2 levels and they were low. So she upped me to 3 vials a day. At that point I started with Bravelle. The vials are around $40-$50 each so at the end I was injecting $150 in my thigh each night! YIKES. LOL
All told I went through 23 vials of the meds. A friend of mine gave me 6...the DR donated 10 to me and I paid for 7. She charged me $280 for 7. They ask women (if they are willing) who are sucessful to donate any left over meds that their insurance paid for back to the office so they can donated it to people like me who insurance denied.
I think all told I had blood drawn three times to check the E2.
On CD 13 I had another u/s to see how many eggs we were growing. I had two. I was shocked cause I thought there would be more. I do O on my own so I figured with the meds I would have super ovulation with little meds. Soooo not the case.... lots of meds and only two eggs
Anyways.... on CD14 I did what they call a trigger shot. It was around $45 and it is 10,000 HCG. They gave me the shot at the office. Then on CD 15 I went in for the IUI. On CD 16 I totally felt ovulation. We DTD twice the day after the IUI. We DO have sperm issues so I am not sure if that helped.
About the whole process... Well it actually was fun. I HATE needles, but when they are for a great cause it really doesn't matter. LOL By the last day I was soooo sick of them though. The shots don't hurt too bad. You can do them in the stomach or thigh. I chose the thigh.
My DR isn't a fan of Clomid. She said injectables are the way to go. No side effects, and MUCH better results from what she has seen. So she started me straight on injectables. If you haven't had a HSG done (where they put the dye in your tubes) they will need that done before they start you on meds. They also require a semen analysis done too. I had already had both done so she just went with those results.
About cost.... it all depends. My bill before insurance (Preffered Care) kicked in was $2935 plus meds at $966 = $3901. LUCKILY I was able to change my OB/GYN to the RE so they could bill as OB/GYN not RE and we got all but $272 of the $2935 covered. So my cycle cost me $598 plus a couple $40 co-pays.
What sucks is it only gives you the same odds as a *normal* couple each cycle. So with no insurance at all it could get very expensive.
I hope I answered most of your questions. Good luck! And LOTS of
