I just had a conversation with one of the ultrasound technologists at the hospital that I work at. She asked me when I go for my next u/s. She knew that I had been pretty upset about not seeing anything at my first one. I was 6 weeks and only saw the sac. The PA saw the fetal pole, but I didn't see a thing. She told me that if I had my u/s done at our hospital rather than the office, we would have been able to see it better. Simply because of the better equipment. I wondered about that myself, but wasn't sure. I told her that I can't wait to see the baby's heartbeat and that I knew that it would be too early to hear it, but I couldn't wait to see it. She said that they get in ALOT of trouble if they turn the sound on (M-mode?). That they are not allowed to at our hospital. It jars the baby so much and magnifies the sound within the womb by like 5X, that it's like them being at a rock concert. She said that if anyone turns it on during one of my u/s's, tell them to turn it off. I was so surprised by this. She said that alot of places do it, including the perinatal center. I don't know if this is new research out and they don't know about it yet or what. The only thing that I know is that we work in a level one trauma facility run by the state and they get in big time trouble if they do it.

Interesting. When we had AJ's big ultrasound they only turned on the sound for a minute tops so we could hear it at the end of the session, and then it was turned right off. It isn't like I don't get to listen to it at the OB's office, ya know? So I will have to try to remember to make sure they keep it off next time.

That is amazing! I have never heard my babies heart beat at a u/s just with doppler at dr's or at home with my medical grade doppler. They turned on the sound one time to check umblical blood flow with a emerg u/s.
