Yesterday (New Years Day) my parents invited my in-laws over to visit and have dinner. They all get along so great and we had a nice time just the 6 of us. Of course, my Mom and MIL couldn't have gotten together without asking about grandchildren.

The conversation started out as a joke wiht my MIL who "borrowed" a stuffed, animated elf 3 years ago and has yet to give him back. I sent out a ransom note in the beginning of December, but got a reply that our Elf wouldn't be returned until we produced a grandchild. So, she brought it up again of course and said that I was now working on a time line and that her intern had locked our Elf in the office safe. I asked her what the time line was and she said December 2009.

So I delved a bit further into the topic and said, "well who is going to buy diapers and materninty clothes for this pregnancy and baby that you are both requesting?" They were the first things I could think of. My MIL's hand shot up in the air faster than you'd believe. So I replied by saying, "well can I get that in writing?" And she (bless her heart) proceeded to write this: (And I'm copying it word for word minus the last names)

"I, being of sound mind this 1st day of January 2009 do hereby swear to my daughter0in0law Cristina in front of her parents, her father-in-law and husband that I will purchase diapers and maternity clothes for Cristina should she produce a grandchild within one years time (Expiration date 12/31/2009).
Signed,
Kathee.........."

Let me just tell you that I'm going to have that laminated and tuck it away for the day that I announce my pregnancy! .... I'm going to hold her to her word too! DH said that he wouldn't be surprised if she actually did it too... he said she'll probably spoil our children rotten. It's probably the truth too.

So, now I'm going to be working her desire to have a grandchild to my advantage. If I have to hear the qestions over and over, I'm at least going to get something for it! I can't wait to see just how much she's willing to give us before we can announce that we're having a baby! Man, I love that woman!

Wow, that is great! Definitely makes it a little easier to tolerate all those TTC questions, huh? Hopefully you'll be able to cash in on her offer very soon!!

Thanks Alicia! We decided to call and make an appointment with my Dr but they have been closed for the last 2 weeks over the holidays (except to their very pregnant patients LOL) so I'll be calling Monday. They tend to get people in quickly, so hopefully we'll be all set! Then again, hopefully I won't need the darn appointment cause I'm on my way to getting a BFP!

It really does make it a bit easier!!! I have been praying that I can cash in on the offer before the month is over!

That's so nice! My MIL has 12 grandchildren and all she can say is "If I have any more they're all getting a one-dollar bill for their birthdays!!" Meanwhile my poor mother has none (I'm an only child).

I hope you are whipping out that contract for redemption very soon![/b]
I think my MIL is being so generous because my DH is an only child too! I'm her only hope at Grandchildren! LOL.... I play that card a lot though.. "be nice to me or no grandchildren". I would never really do that though!
I did have to LOL though about the one dollar bill thing. That is too cute! Hopefully you'll be able to add the next baby and instill the $1 rule for your MIL! He he he

Better yet, it came with a note attached about how she wants to be a mimi again (my niece is 3 1/2). Wears me out a little. And she would NOT be volunteering maternity clothes or diapers! (did i mention we've been married for almost 2 months and haven't told anyone we're even interested in having a baby anytime soon).

However your MIL did make me smile. That is incredibly cute!

That is hilarious Cris! Be sure to hold her to it Diapers aren't cheap - especially if you go name brand! Cloth diapers you save in the long run but it is an expensive start up.

Thats so funny that she actually wrote it down for you - its really sweet. Dh is an only child also so im her only chance of being a grandma - she doesnt talk about it though as she knows we are trying. It did take her 18 months to concieve Dh so im guessing its my IL's fault we arent pregnant yet!

A note too?!?!? That's a bit much if you ask me! LOL... and you guys have only been married for such a short amount of time (not that it means anything at all). Well hopefully you'll be able to "surprise" her with a baby soon

No- they really don't let up! I was happy I got it in writing though... I would probably never hold her to the terms of her letter, but to be able to say, This is what you made me deal with all the months we were trying"... that would be interesting!

Oh I know it! That's why I was so glad that I thought of diapers! I'm not sure whether we'll go cloth or disposable yet, but I figure either way, I'd be saving a TON of money!

Isn't it fun to have some power over the "grandmothers" Clare??? LOL- Just kidding... Hopefully it won't be much longer until we both can announce that we're pregnant and make our MIL's the happiest women in the world! Although having Girls like you and I as Daughter-in-law's should make them happy enough!

It's funny you say that cause my MIL has requested 4 grandsons, and then I can have the granddaughters... I always tell her that if she is going to finance each of them from birth through College graduation, then I'll give her all the grandchildren she wants!
