This is probably the pettiest thing I've ever gotten mad over, but it pissed me off when I heard it this morning and I'm still fuming. (Thanks AF and PMS Grrr) I talked to my SIL today and apparently, I busted the big secret that they got another dog. (I could hear the dog barking in the background and I know it isn't their dog)
They can do what they want, but they are always complaining about the dog they have now. He literally ate the floor in their kitchen and is currently working on their cabinets. He eats all my nephews toys too. They also complain that they are worried about money, so of course the solution to that is to add another dog to the family and increase food and vet bills!
Here's the part that really pissed me off... they named their new puppy the name we'd chosen for our first born son. Now, when they were naming their second son, they decided that they didn't like that particular name at all and they'd never use it. I thought, whoo hoo, I have dibs! It is a family name and we both liked it. When I asked her about it today she said, well, I didn't like it for a person, but it's ok for a dog. Did she know that I liked that name? Yes, I had mentioned it on several occasions. Could she have forgotten? Sure, but I it's not likely. Why would they give their dog a name that is a family name? What happened to Spot, Fido, Sparky or something creative? Apparently, their animals have to have Italian names. Their other dog has the same name as DHs baby cousin who was born before they got the dog and they knew full well what her name was.
I haven't gotten DH's response to this one yet, but I can't imagine it'll be good. I have other names that I like, but none that we love as much as the one we can't use now. I honestly don't think that this dog will be sticking around too long. I think they'll find it's too much, and even if they do give the dog to someone else, I'm sure everyone will still remember that they had a dog with that name and if we did decide to name our kid that, it'll always be, "well that was the name of our dog" Sheesh!
Ok, now I'm done ranting about it. I'm still furious, but at this point what can I do. I'll be sure to let her know I'm mad the next time I talk with her.
Sorry all my posts have been cranky, complainy ones lately! I'll try to be better! I promise!

Sorry she was so inconsiderate like that. People like that really aggravate me. I would name my kid that name anyways and if someone mentions the dog I would say, yeah, well we liked it first! LOL! But I am that way sometimes!

OMG! That is so great! That totally put a smile on my face! Thank you! I really should name my kid that anyway. LOL... I'm never like that, but maybe I should start being like that!

Yay! I'm not a freak who's lost it! LOL... I was starting to worry about that! Thanks for making me feel justified in the way I'm feeling!
I emailed DH and he was just as pissed as I was. As he put it, "it's not like we have come right out and said, Please don't use the name we've chosen to name your pets", but you've (meaning me) have stated on a few occasions how much you like that name and would likely use it in the future". Apparently we should have these conversations recorded and put into written transcripts that are notarized! It'll be the only way that we'll ever be heard in my family! Thank goodness DH is an only child and we won't have to deal with this in his family! Apparently we need to re-think our Not Sharing The Name We've Chosen before the baby is born idea! Gees!

That's so annoying Cris! I don't think it's petty at all! I might still use it too, especially if the dog isn't around long (which is just awful, it sounds like they never should have gotten it in the first place).

Wow, that would royally piss me off. But you know what? Don't let a dog stop you from giving your child the name they deserve. Once the baby's here you'll forget all about that darn dog anyway.

I'm p*ssed for you! I agree - use the name. You've liked it for a long time. If anyone makes a comment simply express that SIL knew that you liked the name, so in essence, she named her dog after your future child!

You guys are the best... you've made me feel like I'm not over reacting and I needed someone to do that! I agree- People can be jerks Toni!
Thanks to you ladies, I won't be taking the name off our list just yet since I still really love the name... I'll see what happens with the dog too. But I'll refuse to call it by the name The unfortunate part is, they only live 10 minutes away, I'll be seeing the darn dog a lot... fun times!

Use it anyway. The dog won't be around forever. I'd be mad too, PMS or no PMS!

I would be pissed too!! My SIL did the pretty the same thing except it wasnt her dog she named it was her SON!!! Me and DH were tossing around baby names when we lived with his gma (his sister stayed there a lot when she was home) but I had it wrote down in a notebook and she must of saw it. Her and DB didn't pick out a name until the day my nephew was born and she used one of the two boy names I had picked out!! I was FURIOUS and of course I had to be there the whole time she was in labor and had him I can't stand her and she can't stand me so thats probably why she did it to me!

LOL Katey! I figured that I was probably over-sensitive because I have AF, but it seems like I'm not!
Oh wow Laci! That really sucks that she used it on your nephew! I'm sorry that happened!
Thanks for the support ladies and for listening to me complain so much!

Nah, if it makes you feel any better, I told DH your story last night. His jaw dropped and he said "I'd be SO MAD". So it's definitely not you.

LOL... No I really feel better that it's not just me!
DH came home this morning and as he was falling asleep (or he might have already been asleep) he goes, "Man, we should have just had a baby a long time ago so that we would already have dibs on that name" Ummm... NO DUH Honey!!!! We've only been trying for that for the last 19 months! Sheesh!

Cris, I would be totally ticked off too! I also say use the name anyway. When my SILs got pregnant, I didn't share anything about names or baby room decor until they had already decided for themselves what they wanted.

Thanks Ash and Lynda!
I am definitely keeping the name on the list! It is just a shame that she had to go and pull something so boneheaded but I shouldn't be surprised... she is always doing something like this!
