I was just curious if you are a fan of the soap One Life To Live. The name jarhead is a nick name Natalie gave Jared (characters) on that soap so I was just curious if that is where your screen name came from.

Lol, I have never seen it.

My forum name is jarheadwed because I am married to a jarhead, a nickname for Marines! There is this bottle of wine made by Marines for the Marine Scholarship program called Jarhead Red, so I played off that and am jarheadwed on most forums. My fertility chart is called jarheadbred, similarly.

Oh my gosh I had no idea about that nickname. Too funny! Well that couple I was telling you about on that soap is getting married so when I saw the name I instantly thought of them. I wonder what the nickname for an airmen is.

according to DH: zoomie, maverick. Those are names other branches call airmen, just like other branches call Marines jarheads, devil dogs, and leathernecks.
Here is a list of common branch nicknames:
Jarhead (Marines)
Deck Apes (Navy)
Devil Dog (Marines)
Grunt (infantry)
Leatherneck (Marines)
Leg (non-airborne infantryman)
Airheads/Vapor Heads (Air Force)
Salt (older Navy guys)
Squid (Navy)
Anchor Cranker or Crank (Navy)
Doggies or Dog Faces (Army)
Fly Boys (Pilots and Air Force)
Puddle Pirates (Navy)
Shallow Water Boys (Coast Guard)
Wingnut or Winger (Air Force)
Twidget (Navy techs)
Ground Pounder (infantry)
Bubblehead (submariner)
Zoomie or Zoomer (Air Force)

Puddle Pirate is a Coast Guard nickname... NOT Navy ..

There are a lot of nicknames that the different branches call one another.. It's not meant offensively it's just a joke.. lol..

The one I hear the most for Air Force is "Chair Force"

I got that list off another forum, I had never heard of more than a few of them. I am not sure about much other than Marines and I know several soldiers who said dogface is a really old term (WWII), rarely used. I know my husband's unit has their own nicknames, but I think its just what they came up with on their own.

My DH calls them the chair force too.

I don't take offense to it. I think it's Funny. I'm from a long line of military in my family. My husband always rags on my dad who was air force. It's all in good humor.

Yeah, I know its all in good fun too. My DH refers to the Marines as the Men's Department of the Navy.

I know some people take offense, so I was just commenting that it's not meant that way..

My DH is Navy, one time we were with my Grandma, talking and got around to other branches.. we made a comment about how the Coast Guard is just a bunch of Puddle Pirates and she got all bent out of shape about it (her father was Coast Guard). We tried telling her that it's not meant that way and all military people joke around like that, but she wasn't hearing it...

Ah here's another one for ya..

My DH is a "Spook" in the Navy.

I asked DH what other names they had for military and he said only the ones that are on the list previously mentioned.

My dad gets bent out of shape when any one calls air force members nicknames...but then he turns around and says that he's "retarded from the military" instead of being retired.
