I have a question about your primary care physician....

Long story short, I tend to have tightness/tension in my neck and upper back. I've been to a chiro for probably 1.5+ years now (I go about once a month, although lately it's been every 3 weeks), I also get massages when I can, and I just started acupuncture. I wouldn't call it constant, but it's definitely chronic. It worries me alot because there's no way I could probably use a baby carrier, if I carry a backpack for like 20 mins (even with light weight) it tends to start to hurt. I do have to get better at exercising and stretching though.

So...on Saturday I went to the driving range. About 3/4 way through it started to hurt, but no more than usual. Seeing as I hadn't swung a golf club in a year it didn't surprise me since I was using muscles in a different way. I stretched and stuff, but by Saturday night it was really hurting. I used a heating pad and ibuprofen. By Sunday it was KILLING! I literally sat on the couch all day on the heating pad. If I tried to move 1/2" in any direction, I'd get a shooting pain down my spine.

Now back to my question! I called my Dr at 9:30 this morning. I always just leave a message with the MA, then she calls me back with what the Dr says. I'm curious if that's how every one else's PCP works? I don't tend to call my Dr for much. Really, a UTI and she calls me in a prescription. Other than that I see her for my yearly exam. I don't know if she's actually going to want me to come in, or just call me in a muscle relaxer or something? But it's already 1pm, so now I'm worried she won't see me until tomorrow. Which is one thing for the pain, it's better than yesterday. But I'll have to take another day off work (which I probably will anyway).

Sorry that got so long! Give me your please!

First, I'm sorry you're in pain! I have a few sports injuries that act up once in a while and I know it's not fun... I hope you start feeling better soon.

Next, my PCP generally will call back within a few hours. I don't think I've ever had to wait longer than 5 hours for Someone to call me back. If I call about something they've seen me for already, they will just tell me what to do over the phone, but if its something new, they make an appt for me to be seen.

I would say that if your Dr/MA doesn't call back soon, you should call again. Especially if you're in that much pain. Hopefully they'll have some answers for you very soon!!!

Hmm...I never get to talk to my DR, usually i just call in and get an apt. If I were you I would call again and ask for an apt. tell them it is really bad, i always feel it is better to be proactive...

The Dr just called back. It was about 4 hours. And I knew they wouldn't want to see me. I said to DH that if I was an addict I'd have the best doctor!

Anyway, they called me in a muscle relaxer and vicodin. But I took a vicodin last night (with dinner) and threw up 3 times. And I don't feel like it helped the pain much. They said if it's not better by Wednesday to call back and she'd see me. I feel like it's better today than yesterday so I'm assuming it will get better day by day.

BUT I am on CD 10 and need to get to BDing! I mentioned it to DH last night and he said he wouldn't be able to stop thinking about me being in pain lol I have a few days before it's important though. Priorities!

I'm glad you have a script called in. My PCP is actually really good about personally speaking with me when I call even though I'm on hold for a year (my OB works the way your PCP works though). Anyway, I've had the bad bad pain you're speaking of (although it could certainly be caused by something different). I had to go in to the office one time because the pain was like what you are describing (I get it in my right shoulder), and got muscle relaxers and an anti-inflammatory pill. HUGS and hope the muscle relaxers help you out.

The first time I mentioned the tightness/tension to her probably 2 years ago she prescribed me the muscle relaxer and I don't think it helped any.

I was thinking of calling my chiro but the thought of her touching my neck scares me too much!

Oh well, hopefully it gets better each day!

I only see my PCP every few years if I absolutely have to. I see my OB more than my PCP and I never call the office.

I suggest switching to Aleve (or the generic form Napoxim Sodium). You can't take it if you are pregnant, but it is supposed to great for muscle pain. It has helped me in the past. Good Luck!

Thanks! My first couple doses I was taking Aleve, then switched to Ibuprofen. I may try Aleve again I do feel it helped more than the Ibuprofen. Anything at this point!

Thanks as always ladies!

My OB/GYN works that way. My PCP is a close friend of the family because we've been going to him since I was a baby and he usually is the one to call me back. You can always call back and request to speak with the DR directly.

It's a lot different here. It's really hard to get in to see your PCP - even when you're sick. They aren't allowed to call in a Rx without seeing the patient either. If I have something really pressing I'll go to a walk in clinic instead of calling my PCP.

I hope your neck feels better soon. I would call my chiro if I were you - just to see what they think.
