They usually take a ball, put it in the pocket and see how it rolls out and they also measure the head to see if it meets regulations in width and length. They will also measure the shaft. (And yes, I giggle
every time the coaches talk about "head" and "shaft" and measuring them

Generally, when a stick is Illegal, it's because it's got too big of a pocket and the ball takes it's time rolling out. A big pocket means they can hold and cradle the ball easier and when their stick is hit, it won't fall out as easy (thus giving them an unfair advntage). With this particular stick, the head was too small. It was pinched in at the top. They kinda knew it wasn't all that legal, but since they'd never been caught, it wasn't an issue!

The kid went out and got a new head the other day and that fixed the problem.
