A friend of mine's husband had a vasectomy last year and he had a test done and all his sperm are dead. They currently dont have insurance but desperately want to concieve..they have never had a problem getting pregnant before..hence the vasectomy. Well the prices on the vasectomy are on the high end so she wanted me to find out if anyone had experience with sperm retrieval and if they will do it with a IUI, and if so, how much it runs without insurance?! so if anyone has ANY answers i would greatly appreciate it! thank you in advance!

I don't know exactly (varies from place to place, clinic to clinic, and you can sometimes work something out with a doc), but found this for IUI:

Q: How much does IUI cost?

A; This is definitely something to consult your doctor or clinic about as the price varies considerably. Ask for a rate sheet, if available, and also ask what your cycle is likely to entail. The IUI procedure and sperm washing average $200-300, but the cost of medications, ultrasounds and bloodwork can make a considerable difference. Someone doing a natural IUI cycle may spend only $200, while someone on injectable medications with monitoring may spend $5,000-6,000.

As for the cost of retrieval, it varies, too, depending on what type of retrieval--without microscopes, it's fairly inexpensive, but there are some procedures that can shoot the price VERY high. In many cases, a vasectomy reversal may be much less expensive than the retrieval and IUI.

I would suggest your friend talking to a doc. Many will do the office visit at a minimal cost and assess their chances of success. Only a doctor knowing their exact circumstances could give a good estimate of cost and success!

That said, I know of at least 4 people personally who have either had a reversal or retrieval after vasectomy who have had great success. I hope that your friends are able to find something that will work for them and get that baby they want!!! Good luck!!!

Hey Danielle! I was lurking over this way and I can tell you a reversal will be a lot cheaper if they are wanting to use husbands sperm, if they are going the route of donor sperm and IUI, I don't know exactly the cost of the donor sperm but I know here where I live my doctor charges $200 for the IUI.
We paid for DH's reversal $8000 but it could cost that to do a biopsy and retrieve his sperm. I would definately have them talk to her doctor about it and see what route he would suggest that they take.
In our situation it was going to up our chances and cost a lot less to do the reversal than the IVF (and to tell you the truth using donor sperm and doing IUI wasn't even an option that my DH would consider Said he would feel that its MY baby and not HIS)

The time we had with you was brief,
We had to say good-bye,
Now angels kiss your little face,
And sing your lullaby.

Someday again, we'll be with you,
To cherish all those things,
Until that day it helps to know,
You're safe in angels wings.
