I love how crabapples bloom pink in the spring. We had an ornamental crab apple at our last house (it blooms, but there are no apples). It depend what you're hoping to achieve with your tree(s) Lynda. Do you want a fast growing tree, or a shade tree, or just a pretty tree? Birch trees take a lot of water and can get messy when they drop their seeds. Poplars grow really fast. We have 2 lilac trees that we like. You should probably ask at your garden centre what they recommend.

Be sure to post some before & after photos.

We are in the process of adding a few trees ourselves! We are going to get a couple Dogwood trees to put up by the house for some shade (and we'll keep them trimmed to be small). I love when they bloom white in the spring! My absolute favorite are cherry trees (we had a beautiful big cherry tree when we moved in to our house- I had multiple pitchers of amazing cherries off of it, but something got in it and killed it). We are going to buy one of those dark leaf cherries to replace it- they get really big, and that's what I want!

I am not much help - we can't do much but citrus down here. We have 2 loquats that were given to us and aren't doing well - they need more water I think. My MIL has a lemon, orange, and fig tree.

At my mom's house we had 4 pear trees, an apple, a plum and a cherry tree. The birds always got into the cherries before we could and the apple just wasn't a good fruit tree as small as it was - not sure how it is now - I haven't been back there in 10 years. The plum was always a good producer and it got tall enough it was a great shade tree. The pears can get really tall and depending on the type depends on the flavor (my moms needed to be picked and ripened for them to taste really good).

Kimberley, I like pretty trees. ones with nice shapes that are full. i am very drawn to the crabapples. i'll have to check out the ornamental ones - thanks!!!! we're probably going to get a maple in the front of the house. one of our neighbors has one and it looks so nice. i drove around today to see what others had. that helped too. thanks for the help!!!

My parents have a Flowering plum tree which is beautiful. It has these beautiful pink blossoms in May and they turn to these cute little plums. The birds love the plums. Now the only downside is that the blossoms are only out for 1 week and if there's a big wind, it's less. But for the week it's in bloom, it's very pretty!
