My mom sent me an e-mail, there is a 50 hectare forest fire near where they live. So far the winds are pushing the fire away from them, but they are on evacuation alert! Here's a news story on it: CTV Calgary- Huge fire forces 5,000 to flee in Kelowna, B.C. - CTV News, Shows and Sports -- Canadian Television

They really, really need some rain. I hope that the winds push the fire towards the lake or something.

My folks are still in their house. But the fires are still burning. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated and the highways are closed. Here's the updated story: Castanet.net - Kelowna's Home Page

They're saying that this wasn't started by a lightning strike ~ which means that someone started it. That makes me so angry

How very irresponsible of someone! I pray for all those involved and for your parents to be spared from the fire.

Update: July 24th - the 2 fires nearest my parents are under control. Everyone who was evacuated was allowed to return home. Everyone (including my parents) will remain on evacuation alert until the fires are out and/ or the conditions improve.

There is a new fire to the NW of them. It's getting pretty big (about 400 hectares and growing). People living near that one are all evacuated. They really need rain in the area!

I will keep praying for them to get rain. I am happy to hear that your family is ok. How devastating such a disaster must be...I hope most homes will be spared.

Thankfully only 3 homes were lost. A few more had some damage, but mostly they were spared. Unfortunately about 10 homes were looted while they were evacuated (can you believe it?).

Actually, my family hasn't had to evacuate. They've been under an evacuation alert for a week, but haven't had to leave. Thank goodness.

All of this really puts things into perspective though. Can you imagine if you were given 15 minutes to leave your home (potentially for good)? What would you take, what would you leave? My folks have packed up a few boxes and have them ready to go, just in case.
