I hope you ladies don't mind if I keep this post on here to remind me and to update you ladies on having this HSG done. I want to know what it is like and what is needed in able to have it done, so I am sure there are other women out there who would also like to know. Therefore, I am going to document EVERYTHING I am going to go through from seeing if it is covered until it is actually over.

9-15-06~ (9:30 am)

I called my doctor's office and spoke with his nurse. My doctor himself is the best I have come across for getting back to people. When I call and leave a message on the nurse's voicemail, the doctor himself calls me back and not the nurse. Anyways...I talked with his nurse this time when I called and she is going to call my insurance company herself to see if it is covered. She said it's better if she does it because they get to asking alot of questions and she has my chart and will be able to answer the questions about me and about the procedure better. She is going to call me back when she finds out. I also told her that if it is not covered, I would like to know how much it costs and go from there. I will update when she calls back!

Doctor's office called and said that we have a $500 co-pay for this procedure...UGH...We just paid almost $9000 for this surgery and don't have an extra $500 laying around...UGH!! So now I am waiting for the doctor to call me back to talk about it. We will see what goes on from there!

Hi. I am sorry to hear this. I hope you manage to gather the money together.

I had the procedure last week. The doctor gave me painkillers and antibiotics to take before the procedure, so I guess this may be an additional cost you needd to consider. I won't lie, it was uncomfortable (like a bad smear test) but it was over pretty quickly. I had a bit of cramping in the evening and I also suggest you wear a panty liner after the procedure. Good luck.

Hi. No my insurance didn't cover it, I chose to pay privately. It cost £150 + £25 for the painkillers / antibiotics. I guess thats pretty similar to what you have been quoted in $. But we've not had the additional expenditure you have had, so it was not such a difficult decision for us.

We are very lucky in the UK in that we can can fertility treatment free of charge, but there are long waiting lists, so DH and I decided we wanted to get the ball rolling, particularly as I have PCOS and it will probably take me me longer to conceive anyway.

My doctor advised that people should have the HSG from day 1-10 of your cycle to ensure they are not performing the HSG when you could possibly be pregnant. If you have a short cycle they may suggest different dates.

I am sure you will be fine - it really is quick (10 mins), so the discomfort is just for a short time.

I was lucky - i was given the all clear and am starting clomid next week. Fingers crossed for you.

Sorry to hear it would be so expensive for you. Did your doctor say you should definitely get it done? Would something else be better for you at this point that is more affordable? Do they have a payment plan if you do get the HSG?

Ok my journey has ended...I talked with my doctor...he seems to think I should go ahead and keep trying until the end of this year. The insurance needs a note of medical necessity before they will even consider paying for it and he seems to think that there is a good chance they would deny it. He said if they didn't pay anything and we paid out of pocket for it, it would be above $1,000 by the time I paid him and the lab. UGH everything is sooo expensive and our insurance is crappy! Not only does it not pay anything for us...they don't pay anything for our son's hearing aid. My son wears a hearing aid that costs $3200! I just really dislike any insurance be it medical, dental, home owners, car, life...any of it!

Oh well...I guess we are ttc on our own for the rest of 2006. My fertility friend ends in 11 days, I better update it huh???

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. This cycle really go all out if you can, EPO, Robitussin, both of you take your vitamins, visualization, oh yeah and BD as much as possible. Even if FF detects you O'ed I suggest still BDing every other day if your schedules allow it. Two cycles, FF moved my O date after I thought we were covered and stopped BDing, so we missed out. So this cycle, we're BDing every other day no matter what, even if I'm exhausted from the long hours.
