So, my husband and I just bought our first home like Friday. Well, we were planning on our tax return to help pay off some major bills in order to make the 1st mortgage payment in April. Today, I recieved a letter from the Social Security Department saying that our tax return was direct deposited into our bank acount a few days ago and then was taken out by the SS Dept. to pay back a debt that my father had a few years back. ***? Im almost 21 now and I recieved SS Disablitly benefits for several years because my father is disable and so the children are entitle to monthly income . The money stopped when I was 17 because they said that they had over paid me and that for the next year they would not pay me but pay themselves back. I was supposed to get the money until I graduated college. Which, by the way, I never recieved benefits ever again. Anyway, NOW, they come back and just took my husbands tax return without us ever even getting a notice that we owed them. I never got a single notice and I think its rude that they can just steel money from your bank account without letting us know before hand. IT WASNT EVEN MY DEBT, THEY SHOULD MAKE MY DAD PAY FOR IT!!! I just dont know what we are gonna do, now we have no money for the new house to get our utilities turned on. Im sooooooo upset.
OH I DID. I RAISED SOME HELL ALLRIGHT. THEY GOT AN EARFULL. My dad went to the ss office and they said too bad too sad. I dont get my money back. But, my dad said that he would give me some money but i dont know how much.
That doesn't seem right that they can do that with NO notice. I'm sorry that happened, what a total bummer! Making that first mortgage payment is HARD, especially right after all the costs of moving.
Congrats on the new house! But I don't see how they can just yank money back from you like that. I know they are government and all but that's just like pick pocketing!
