Need some help about AF and using the patch??

Well AF came this morning after I was so excited yesterday because it was day 28 and no AF! Thought maybe I was late and needed to take a test. But of course not. This morning, there she was. So this is month 17 we are going into of ttc. But my question is about AF. I started using the patch in may 2003 and stopped in august 2004. I used my 3 patches and then went patch free that 4th week and got my period like normal. But I never refilled the prescription anymore. So after that last normal cycle I didn't have a period for 6 months! Finally I got the worst cramps one night, so bad I had to leave a movie and go home, and on the way home in the car I just gushed blood all over my pants and seat. I had to sit on my coat the rest of the way home. Never had a period that bad, but I guess it was to be expected after 6 months of not having one. Well ever since then my periods are so unpredictable. They do come every 27-30 days but they use to be at least 4-5 days long. Now they last 2-3. And sometimes 1 day! They are heavy with clots sometimes and others, like now, I just seem to spot the whole time or have a really light cycle. Told my gyno but she didn't seem concerned. I have been having my cycle since I was 9 and they have never been this way. Does this sound concerning and could it be playing a factor into why I'm having a hard time getting pregnant? I mean I haven't gotten pregnant since that happened. I had my son and another pregnancy 1 month before the patches. But no pregnancy at all since then. What do you guys think?

My RE explained to me that a womans period should be somewhat consistent each month in volume and how long it lasts.

I think that your gyno should be looking into it. Do you use OPK's to see if you ovulate?

I have used opk's twice and it showed i ovulated when I did try them. I am starting them again this month and plan to continue with them until we decide to see a fertility specialist. I think we are giving it 24 months and then we're taking some other steps.
