I had recently moved into my first apartment with my best friend. She met a guy at work and thought he was a nice guy. Then she saw him again at a Halloween party. She thought he would be good for me and she talked to him and got his number. I had never really dated before so I was just fine with being single. A few days after she got the number she called me and told me I should call him that day. I had been taking a nap, and told her no. She kept calling and calling and waking me up. I got so annoyed that I finally just called him just so I could continue with my nap**.
I called and talked to him on the phone and decided to meet that night. Not knowing what I was getting myself into, I went over to his house instead of having him know where I live. I totally expected a guy in the flannel shirt, wranglers and cowboy boots because of his accent (southern).
I get to his house and he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt...much to my relief. He wanted to take me to see his roomates band play, but we had a little while before we needed to go. He ended up showing me family pictures (I was shocked at how close a guy could be to his mother--not a mommy's boy but just cared for her a lot).
We went out to the bar where his friend was playing and he saw a couple other people from his work outside there. It was supposed to be an all ages show (I was 20), but it was 21 & over. He was going to try to get me in the back door. His friend bought some wristbands from a guy on the street because they were also under 21. Apparently DH didn't know I had already gotten a wristband because he was very fidgeting while we were walking around before the band played--I thought he was just nervous. All of a sudden he handed his wristband to me--he had worked hard to get that band off his wrist--so sweet! Sneaking me into a bar on our first date (haha!).
I am, or at least used to be, a quiet and shy person, but I felt so comfortable with him, unlike anyone I had met before, that I talked to him like I had known him for years.
I dropped him off at his house (I drove because he just had a motorcycle). I got out to say goodbye and there was that little ackwardness, and I reached over, gave him a hug and said goodbye. He told me a few years later that it meant so much for me to give him that hug.
That was the end of that! My friend said I wasn't supposed to marry him, I was just supposed to get a few dinners out of the guy.
**On a side note...the reason that I had been taking a nap that day and was really annoyed that she kept calling to wake me up was because I had mono--I didn't get diagnosed until DH and I had been dating for 6-7 weeks. 2-3 years after we were married it was mentioned, and apparently DH thought that I had cheated on him. He was very relieved to know that I had gotten it before I met him. Funny how he kept that inside for years!
