Saturday was a very normal day at our house. It was 91 degrees and I was feeling too hot and I had a headache. I couldn't wait to go to bed, but Nash - my 2 year old - fought me like crazy at bed time and he didn't go to sleep until 10:00. I went to bed at 10:30.
I woke up at 1:10am to contractions that were pretty painful. I thought this was strange because I never had painful contractions until the very end with my other two kids. I got out of bed to walk around to see if they'd go away. They were about 3 minutes apart but only lasting about 30 seconds. They didn't go away when I moved around, in fact, they started getting longer. I woke my hubby up at 1:30 and we called my mom to come over - she lives an hour away and I thought we had plenty of time for her to get here. At 2:00 we called the midwife to let her know that I was in labor. She told us to go ahead and come on in to the birthing center and that she'd meet us there. While we waited for my mom, I decided to get back into bed to see if I could rest. That wasn't going to happen because the contractions were coming fast and strong. I decided that we better call my brother who lives around the corner to come stay with the kids until my mom got there. While my hubby made the phone call to my brother, I got the urge to push. Not good since I was standing in my kitchen, 15 minutes from the birthing center. We got in the car and and as soon as we got out of our subdivision I realized that I didn't have my contacts in and I hadn't grabbed my glasses. I didn't want to be blind when my baby was born, so I told hubby to turn around so I could get them. He said no and it's a good thing he did!! He turned the hazard lights on and drove like a maniac. What is normally a 15 minute trip, took about 7 minutes. I had 4 or 5 contractions in the car and I was trying to make my body not push, which is really impossible. We got to the birthing center and the midwife met us at the car. We got inside and I had time to take my pants off and baby was crowning. She was born 3 pushes later and about 5 minutes after we got there. My entire labor from start to finish was 91 minutes!!! I would have never guessed it would happen that way. Not the repeat spa like waterbirth I had planned, but our baby is here and she's just perfect.
