I never took a class, but I DID do a bit of research on the actual labor process and what my body would be doing. It helped for me to know what was going on physically. But I never took one of those birthing classes, so I'm no help there.
We took a Lamaze class w/ our DS 7 years ago. I really enjoyed it. It was fun to be around all those other pregnant couples. Also, I learned about the labor process like Brittany said. In the end, I was so happy I did it as I knew what was going on during labor, and the breathing was actually VERY helpful since they let my epi wear off. Plus, it empowered SO to help me through the harder parts; he actually paid attention and was very helpful. We took it through Kaiser, and while I'm not a fan of Kaiser, it looked to be the best class offered in the area. I think it cost around $100 at the time; I really can't remember. Lots of times too, you can turn around and submit a claim to your insurance for reimbursement after you have completed it. We got reimbursed. Plus, it was just nice to get out and do something together. We always went to dinner afterwards, it was like our sad attempt at a date night.
We didn't take any classes either, but I read a lot of books with different viewpoints on L&D and BF'ing. The classes in our area were pretty expensive too and not worth it in my opinion. I have no regrets with not taking a class.
