I woke up in the middle of the night last night with pretty severe cramps. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed that I had started actual bleeding. I'm visiting my BIL & SIL and we are 9 hours away from home. I had to know if something was wrong. If I was starting to m/c I wanted to get started home. I did not want to be stuck at my BIL and SIL's and have to go through a m/c. I know what it is like. I wanted to be home.

I woke up DH and asked him to take me to the ER. They ordered bloodwork and and u/s. They had to call in an u/s tech because they didn't have one on site in the middle of the night. The u/s tech quickly said, "your baby is so active and I can see a heartbeat". (BPM=174) She continued her scan. The baby is 6.25 cm. Near the end of the procedure she did tell us that she saw some pooling blood behind the placenta. She thought it was nothing to worry about, but she would have to have the dr. look at it for her to make the determination.

About an hour later the ER doc came in and said that we are right on the cusp of a possible miscarriage. The retroplacental hemorhhage measures 1.1 cm. They want me to follow up with my regular OB on Monday (even though I have a scheduled appointment on Wednesday).

I'm assuming they will watch this spot to see if it grows or shrinks. I'm not on bedrest but I was told to take it very easy.

Have any of you ladies had experience with this? I'm so worried. I tried to do some research on the internet about retroplacental hemorrhage, but not being a medical person, it is all very confusing. I'm sure it will make a little more sense later when I'm not so exhausted from being up all night worried.

Thanks for listening to me rant. Please help me pray that everything will be OK with my little baby!

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry you are having to worry so much. I'm glad you went in, and at least have an explanation for your bleeding. I'm also glad to hear that your baby is doing great. I don't know much about retroplacental hemorage either, but I will do some looking. I will definitely be praying for you and your babe! I think that even though they didn't actually put you on bedrest, you should pretty much put yourself on it.....you don't want to have to worry about every little thing you do. I'm sure your dh will understand. Take care hun.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry you are experiencing this! I really don't know anything about what you described, I wish I could be more help. I really hope it goes away on its own, and things return to normal for you very, very soon. Please KUP, and you and your baby will be in my T&PS. Many, many HUGS!

Oh Sacha, how scary! I am so relieved you were able to see your baby and know that the baby is currently healthy and moving around though. I don't know much about the hemorrhage either but I say kick your feet up and take it easy. Stay hydrated and even if the doc didn't put you on bedrest I think you should still do it until you get to talk to your personal doc and not an ER doc. I hope that this is just a typical ER doc thinking the worst of everything because that is what they always see and that your doctor can give you more information. Many many hugs and prayers coming your way.

Thanks ladies, for your thoughts, prayers and positive vibes. I'm still on the road trying to get home. (I borrowed this nifty high speed access card that works through the cell phone so I can have internet access on the road -- it's a really cool piece of technology). This road trip is taking FOREVER. We should have been their over an hour ago and we aren't even to Florida yet. Driving long distance the Sunday after thanksgiving is the PITS!

Danica -- I'm hoping the same thing -- ER docs seem to be pessimistic and prepare you for the worst, I think. I keep trying to stay positive.

Kelly -- thanks so much for checking up on me -- you are so sweet!

I started bleeding again on the trip home, but there hasn't been any cramping with it. It wasn't much, and it seems to have stopped again. I'm so anxious to talk with my doctor/midwife in the morning. I think I'm going to pretty much demand to be seen and not let them wait for my standard appointment on Wednesday. I will start a new thread tomorrow when I know more.
