Ok, so my little sister is pregnant and she was telling me at Thanksgiving that she has these really bad cravings to eat Dirt!!!????? What does that mean? I know if you crave laundry detergent it means that you have something deficient in your diet - is the same thing true for craving dirt? Anyone else heard of this before? She is due sometime in early Feb.

That's a first, craving dirt? Laundry detergent? I did not even know that people could crave those things. I never heard of any of it, so I'm no help. Now I'm curious.

All of these things are called pica--cravings for non-food items (ice is included in this btw). It's actually fairly common, and usually related to an iron deficiency. She needs to talk to her doctor about this.

Thanks Britt I had no idea. The last blood test tha I took, I was told that I had anemia, but I never crave anything like that. I do eat ice, but I done it all my life, so it's not a new craving for me.

I remember my mother continuously munching on ice for the last several years before I got married. She was actually on prescription iron pills because of her severe anemia, but it didn't really help.

Then she had an emergency hysterectomy because she started to hemorrhage. After that her anemia went away, and amazingly, she doesn't eat ice anymore......

I remember reading about pica in all of the pregnancy books, but I've never actually met someone who's had it. I'm glad you're looking out for her Sam!
