I go to a parents group at my sons school once a week, and every so often they have speakers in to talk about things and give the opportunity for parents to ask questions ect.

Anyway, today we had a midwife come in. And at one point she was talking about homebirth and I said I would love a home birth, and she asked why I dont have one this time round and I said I cant as I have had a c-section.

She went on to say if its what I REALLY want I could have one, She even gave me the number of a midwife that has dealt with, and fully supports VBAC homebirths.

She told me I would be closely monitored during labour and if they had the tiniest concern I would be transferred to hospital straight away.

So I just rang the birthing unit at the hospital, as thats where this midwife is situated and luckily she was there!

She has given me the opportunity to go in and speak to her. We spoke briefly about about my birth history and she says I am a good candidate for a homebirth. But, she said also, that I would qualify for the birthing unit if baby is head down when I go into labour, normally they dont do VBAC births but she said they have had a few succesful VBAC's there. No failed ones - which is a good sign I guess.

So.....I am going to arrange to go in and speak to her in person and weigh up all the pros and cons of every option available to me.

Now, I have been thinking about it all day and I am contemplating it. But, do any of you think it is a stupid idea?

Honey, trust yourself. That's all I have to say. It looks like you are going about deciding in a very smart way. Only you can decide if this is a good decision for you or not, and it looks like you are looking at every possible outcome. If YOU feel like the risks are minimal, then go for it!

I'm always amazed at people who have homebirths. I'm waaaaaaaaaaay too chicken. lol

I think its an AWESOME idea! you would looove it!

even if you dont want to do it at home.. doesnt that midwife have a birthing center you could maybe birth at?

Or even try for a VBAC at a hospital if thats what you would prefer..

My SIL has two kids.. both were c-sections.. but looking back now she really wishes she had taken the oportunity to have a VBAC with her second.

I think if you really want to do it, then go for it! I think it could be a beautiful experience for you and your baby. I would do it in a heartbeat if I wasn't so chicken. LOL

Ok, since you want opinions...IMHO, I do think homebirths are incredibly stupid. I hate to use that word as I know you are not a stupid woman. But I have been on the side of childbirth going wrong in an instant and I know how quickly things can spiral out of control. Had I not been in a hospital when things happened I would have died. No question in my mind that 5 minutes would have made the difference.

I know women have done it since the beginning of human life, but we have also progressed to where (in developed countries) childbirth is not the biggest killer of women and IMO it is because we deliver in hospitals.
