I am pretty sure it has to be paid out of pocket. Although if you donate it, it doesn't cost anything and you can use if you need it (I am sure there are fees and such involved though if you do end up using it). But you risk someone else using it first.
We won't be. If cord cutting is delayed, the placenta will pump the blood into the baby, so that is what we'll be doing.

For those that are donating it, check with your hospital. We wanted to do it, but it's too expensive and Yes, it's out of pocket, Insurance companies do not pay for it. We also wanted to donated but the hospital where Alex was born did not do it, so we would have to pay to send it somewhere.
