I am 37 years old, so my doctor is offering me this test. I had one with my son, but that was a week before he was due.

Has anyone had one due to their age? I am still trying to decide. I really want to know everything I can about my baby before he/she is born. I will carry my baby to term regardless of what the amnio detects.
If I don't have it I know I will worry through my entire pregnancy. I know it is a personal choice, but would love to hear from the mom's who have had this done. Thanks

I'm also 37 years old and was suggested to have one but I made the choice not to. I had the level II u/s and the AFP blood tests and came back with an elevated chance for Downs Syndrome. My DH and I decided that after 6 m/c we didn't want to take that risk of a 7th one to learn something that wouldn't change our mind about our baby. We would still love him as much no matter what. Like you said, it's a personal choice and you have to take all your information and weigh the risks before deciding. I know this probably wasn't helpful but it's the best advice I could give

I'm 37 and I had one. I am a minority here, but I would have terminated if there was a major problem. In my opinion there are worse fates than death, living with a horrible, painful disorder would be one of them.

However, if you are not planning on terminating if you have bad results I wouldn't recommend getting one. Yes it gives you peace of mind, but I had leaking of amniotic fluid and severe cramps/contractions afterwards. I was sure I was going to lose her!

I only had the amnio because my 1st trimester screening test (the Nuchal test) came back slightly elevataed for down's. Then when I had my u/s before my amnio the baby's neck was still measuring large (a possible marker for down's) so I went with the amnio. It doesn't hurt that much to get it done, but I leaked fluid for about 4 - 5 days afterwards and every time I leaked contractions started. It was scary. I guess most women don't leak, but I did. I'm glad I did the amnio though because even at my big u/s yesterday the baby's neck is still measuring a little large, but we already know the baby is OK so it is just one of those things (baby will have a thick neck!).

It is a personal decision, but I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have an indicator that there might be a problem. I wouldn't have done it soley based on my age unless I was over 40.

I had to have an amnio due to my husband having a bad chromosome not my age so I don't know if that helps you or not. I had mine done at 14 weeks and 6 days PG. I had myself all freaked out about it but it was not that bad.
