So there are 6 girls at work pregnant in my department and they are all in their first trimester or about to be in their second. I have overheard (no one hear knows I"m pregnant) them talking about first trimester screening on their babies and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it - what they look for at this point, what the tests are and whatnot! Just curious!

Thanks!

yes, I had it with this one and my last one. Basically it is an ultrasound where they measure a few things on the baby, most importantly the babys neck. Then they take a blood sample. It is a very small amount. Send it off to the lab and they analyze your risk for down's and trisomoy 18. It is pretty painless and quick. They can only do it between 11w and 13w6d I think. I had mine done right at 12 weeks both times.

I screened positive for down's with this pregnancy and opted for an amnio which showed the baby was fine. My risk was only 1 in 200 but I felt it was something I needed to do.

Personally it didn't buy us a whole lot to have it done because we had to wait until I was at least 16 weeks to have the amnio anyway. If I had just gone with the AFP test that is done at 16/17 weeks I would have had the amnio around the same time. But it is up to you, like all screening tests, if you want to get them done.

I had the translucency screen done also at about 12 weeks and it was quick and also gave the opportunity to have another early u/s!!!

Thanks I wasn't sure when it gets done -- Im staying with the specialist until 12 weeks so I guess I'll bring it up either this week at my u/s or next week to see if he'll do it for us and whatnot. I wasn't sure how it worked but I knew it had to be done at a certain specific time. Thanks!
