Well it is 5.30 am here and I woke about an hour ago to what I can only describe as really bad period pain. When I went to the toilet the paper was tinged with pink and I have had some bright red blood with a couple of small clots. I haven't had any mucous or discharge though (sorry if TMI). I have really bad back pain and I know I should be in bed trying to get some rest but I can't!

I have been doing some reading and have read that labour can start a week or more after having the show or sometimes within a day or so. So there is no way of knowing . I haven't had any contractions at all, just really bad period like pain.

I don't want to call the hospital but think maybe I should since I have had some light bleeding without any discharge? I have put on a sanitary napkin just to keep track of any bleeding.

What do you ladies think? This is my first baby so I really have no idea (and neither does DH )!

Any help would be appreciated. Would it be ok if I take some panadol for the back pain, it is so painful and I can't sleep with it? I know panadol is ok in pregnancy but didn't want to mask any other symptoms. Although I am guessing when I have a contraction I will know about it

Definately try the panadol - that is one of the best ways to work out if this pain is labour related, or not. When I thought i was FINALLY in labour with Gaby, my m/w gave me two panadol - and my pains (which were related to the gel they used for the induction), went away.....

I would call them & let them know about the bleeding too... just to be on the safe side!

Sounds promising!
Because it was red bleeding and clots - you should call. Bloody show is often mostly mucous with a bit of blood. It's probably just your cervix dilating but you need to check in with your doc KUP

my early labor with ds1 did feel like period pains. I had no idea they were actually contractions, as all the did was get stronger, but thats how my whole first labor was. I would call and talk to your doc/midwife. They'll be able to tell you for sure or maybe will want to check up on you because of the clots. sounds promising though!

Thanks everyone. I called the labour ward and they got me to go in as they wanted to check the bleeding. Plus I started having contractions! They are pretty irregular at the moment so they monitored me and the baby for about 90 minutes and then sent me home. Sometimes the contractions can be 10 minutes apart, sometimes longer. Baby's heartbeat was really good though and I was having regular contractions with the machine on so at least I didn't feel I shouldn't be there!

I am really hoping something happens today and they become more regular and I don't have to wait days. Everyone at the hospital was very non-commital as obviously each labour is different.

Please don't let the contractions stop! Having another one now actually.......

Forgot to add, if anyone is friends with me on Facebook please do not post anything on there as I don't want anyone from work etc to know when I go into labour.

Thanks
