Grant was supposed to come home today. But this morning one of the NICU doctors called. NICU nurses call, but when she identified herself as a doctor, I knew he wasn't coming home today.
Apparently he de-satted (had his oxygen levels dip) a lot last night. During the carseat test he hit 79, though they re-did it and he was fine. But he needs to be above 92 and he was hanging around 91 a lot. They think it was caused by reflux. He had high stomach acidity early on when he was on TPN (IV nutrition like Auntie Monica instead of eating), so they put him on Prevacid for a little while, and took him off a few days ago because he was doing so well with feeds (he is a little piggy!!!). But I guess he still needed it, because reflux somehow caused him to de-sat (not being a doctor I'm not clear on how that works).
So they put him back on the Prevacid, which must taste great because boy does he love it. We are hoping he comes home tomorrow, but even that isn't sure - he de-satted a few times earlier tonight. If he continues, he'll need a chest x-ray. My poor little guy, so many tests
However, I just called the NICU, and between then and now (8pm and 10pm) he hasn't de-satted once.
So please pray for my little man that Prevacid is the solution and he can come home tomorrow!
No monitor from the hospital, they have declared him to be a normal 12 day old baby. We did purchase the Angelcare monitor that alerts you if the baby stops breathing. It was pricey ($160) and maybe we don't need it, but if we didn't get it I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
Rebecca, I have the angelcare monitor - used it for Gaby & it was such a sanity saver - I don't think I'd have slept for the first 12 months if I didn't have it... I've not it ready & waiting for Emersyn, now
Oh I'm sorry, Rebecca. But I'm hoping your adorable and strong little man can come home today!!

Proudly breastfeeding, pumping, and cloth diapering my little sweet pea!
Your little man is in my toughts. My son was in the NICU when he was born and the same thing happened. He was set to go home and they noticed the dip in his oxygen levels. He was diagnosed with reflux and was sent home on meds a couple days later. He is now a very healthy almost-eight year old! Hope he gets to come home soon!
