Yesterday I was at my rotation when I felt a "gush." I immediately went to the bathroom and saw that I had so much blood coming out that it soaked through my panties and pants. Then I passed a clot about the size of a prune. I felt sick with sadness and fear. I called my husband and he told me to come home immediately.

So I informed my supervisor and left. My poor husband was post call and had only 1 hour of sleep in the last 38 hours, he was exhausted to put it mildly. But he drove me to the ER and we waited 4 hours before being taken into the back. The doc did a pelvic and there was still a fair amount of blood coming out. They took some samples and then we waited about 1.5 hours for an ultrasound.

When the lady brought me in for ultrasound I was already prepared for the fact that she would tell me I lost my baby. You can imagine my shock when she said there was a heartbeat and the baby was okay. My husband and I both sat there in stunned silence until she turned the screen so we could see. There, on the screen, was a formed baby! You have to undestand the last ultrasound showed a blob with a tiny heartbeat. But now there were arms, legs, and everything, and then the baby would wiggle or arch it's back. They did say that the baby's heartbeat was high (180s) which means it was probably in distress.

The doctors still don't know what exactly happened and are calling it a threatened miscarriage and that I am still at risk for a miscarriage. They said I can't lift anything heavy or do strenuous labor. (well duh!) However I can return to my rotation since it is zero stress and all I do is sit all day. I called my primary OBGYN today and am still waiting for a callback. The bleeding tapered off in the ER last night and today I am only passing small brown flecks.

So it's been a tough 24 hours but I still have a living baby, thank God.

I don't think the HR sounds like distress. I am not sure why they told you that? With this baby it got as high as 190 in the first trimester when he was awake and moving. They never said it was too high.

Here is some HR info

Does The Fetal Heart Rate Change During The Second Trimester? - Pregnancy Articles

I bled and had a lot of small clots and brown stringy blood for weeks with this pregnancy. Just try and take it easy as much as possible. Sending a boatload of sticky to you!

You might want to call and ask to be put on progesterone. I was on oral Prometrium with Matthew and with this baby. It really can't hurt and is worth asking for. I had to request to be put on it this time and they just wrote the script.

I think the reason they thought it was distress is because of the big picture. I have been dealing with hyperemesis gravidarum and was very dehydrated, add the bleed to the mix and the fact that the previous heartrate was around 140s and it points to distress.

Either way I am hoping things continue to stay "normal" and I don't go through this again. I am not even 9 weeks and have been to the ER twice...my nerves are shot.

wow, that must have been so scary I hope your'e feeling a bit better now.

From what I know, at that point of pregnancy, it isn't uncommon for the h/b to be in the 180's... around 9-10 weeks it starts slowing down a bit & getting into a more regular range..
