I have my amnio tomorrow at 10AM. I am scared to death! I am terrified that it will cause me to lose the baby! I may panic and change my mind before then.... I really want to know if baby is genetically normal, but I'm scared... I know the miscarriage risk is only like 1 in 300, but it is SO invasive! What if they stab baby?

Has anyone here had an amnio? Did everything turn out ok?

There not going to hurt baby, if i remember right the doctor told me it doesn't go anywhere near baby.. or something like that, this is way i didn't get mine done cause of the fear of lossing her i know its small but i made it that far so it wasn't happeing. I do know you might cramp alittle after getting it done, and you should stay still lieing down i thing they told me.

Erica,
I have not had one, however, I was scheduled to have one with the baby I lost. They reassured me the baby would not be harmed. The possiblity of going into labor is there but its not at all a high possiblity. The information I was given said to take it easy for a couple of days following the procedure.
Can I ask if either of you have anything in your family histories that you're worried your baby will end up having? Or, are you looking for some reassurance? I'm just curious because our OB advised us that it was unnecessary unless we had a family history of something.

Please let us know how everything goes.

My husband has a balanced translocation between chromosomes 1 and 20 (pieces of both chromosomes broke off and switched places, all the pieces are there just in the wrong spots...), it doesn't affect him, he is perfectly healthy, but he produces about 30% genetically abnormal sperm.... I am doing it mainly for reassurance. I was told that this problem causes mainly early miscarriages, there is only about a 3% chance of baby having an unbalanced translocation (too much of one and not enough of the other chromosome) at this stage . They told me that it is more likely that baby is genetically perfect like me or has a balanced translocation like dad. I also want to know if the baby is like DH so I can prepare them for fertility issues in their future...

Ahhh. Yes, I understand the reassurance is worth it...my husband has a very rare form of MD in his family. That is why were going to do ours. However, we had genetic work done on the baby we lost. We worked with the Genetics Department through Childrens's Hospital. Everyone has determined that we have less than a 1 percent chance of having a child present with that particular condition. Just the thought of it was scary for me. But, necessary. Like I said, let us know how it goes. Go home and put your feet up when your done if you can.
