Has anyone had an Amniocentesis? What was it like? I am having one done on 6/27 due to my age and I did not get prenatal care early enough to get the other types of testing done. My procedure is being done at the hospital which has an excellent reputation, I am just nervous.

Agree about Erica, although she was past 16 weeks, because then the chance of m/c drops. I know nothing else about it. Good luck though!

I've had 2 amnios. I had one with my 3rd and one with my 4th. Both times I was 36 weeks though.

The procedure itself is only mildly uncomfortable. With my first amnio the way they went through my uterine wall caused a massive contraction that lasted about 12 hours and only went away after a L&D visit and a shot of demerol but my 2nd was totally normal and I felt fine.

I've never had one, but I hope it goes quickly and painlessly. It's exciting that you'll find out for sure what you're having!

Yes I had one, I was 35 weeks though. I turned it down at 16 weeks because I was too afraid of miscarriage. I was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad.... It caused me to have some gnarly contractions afterwards, I actually spent 10 hours in L&D. I am not sure if that happens with earlier amnios......

Here is how it goes.

They do an ultrasound first, to do measurements and to find a good spot to put the needle. Then they scrub down your skin with iodine. Then they stick the needle in, while still watching on ultrasound. They don't leave the needle in the inserts a catheter so if the baby kicks it he/she can't get hurt. They take about 2 vials of fluid then they pull out. They watch the ultrasound for a minute or two until it stops bleeding into the fluid. They sent me over to labour and delivery, but that was only because I was 35 weeks. I think they just send you home if your are earlier.... My results took 13 days. I actually still have a red dot where they stuck me, it's interesting....

Never had one, but my RE told me if I ever had to have one due to poor early prenatal testing, to make sure I took 200mg of progesterone the day before, the day of, and the day after. Just to relax the uterus and make any contraction that I might get less.........

Im sure all will be good, your a strong woman, just stay off your feet for about 48hrs after and relax!

Thank you again! I will be 18w4d when we get it done. Lori - I still have some progesterone so I will take it, thanks! Mary - I have no intentions of looking at all, I am scared of needles and hopefully my husband will keep me distracted.

You girls rock!
