I'd been going to an RE and on Tuesday baby was measuring 8 weeks exactly. I was discharged and went to my OB today and the baby was 7 weeks 4 days. Doctor said heartbeat was good and it could just be the two different machines as his is not nearly as high tech as the one at the RE, but I'm completely panicked. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't think i can survive a third loss in one year! He said he'd see me again in 2 weeks instead of 4, but i really need some positive experiences.

Trust your doc. If his machine isn't as good it wont take the best measurements, especially when the baby is still that tiny. Try not to worry and enjoy the fact that baby is doing so good! Hang in there!

Baby wont shrink with a nice strong h/b!! Different machines and different people doing the u/s will give you different measurements.....especially at this stage. Since you were seeing a RE, was the 8wk measurement exactly on for your dates? (O date v's LMP date) If you were a day or two ahead, this could be why your measuring more on time with this scan.....just a thought!

The 8 weeks at the RE was a day behind what i expected based on O but since the baby had increased 7 days size in 7 days I wasn't worried at all about that. I'd been off the day at 6 weeks and 7 weeks as well and know that is normal. Good to hear that the baby can't actually shrink with a heartbeat - i know when you miscarry the baby shrinks, so i thought maybe it could be a sign of impending miscarriage. I called the RE to see if they could take me back for one more scan even though i was discharged. Fingers crossed!

It sounds just like what your doctor said. That his equipment isn't as wonderful as the RE's. Please try not to worry (I know it is hard not to)

Agree with everyone else. Different machines could give you different readings. And sometimes, it's the tech's fault that the dates are off. I know it's hard, but try not to worry!! Good luck!

When I went for a sonogram at the Maternal Fetal Medicine place...the baby measured 8 weeks, 3 days. Eight days later I went to the doctor I would be seeing for the entire pregnancy (Maternal was just a check in to make sure things looked good). The baby measured 9 weeks even. I was a little worried too, even though the heartbeats were totally great both times and they said all was fine.

And I am now almost 24 weeks with a healthy baby. The machines were likely very different and even the positioning of the baby can make the measurements a bit off. I know it is hard not to worry, but chances are good the baby is just fine

U/S can be off and I have many techs and doctors tell me its all about who does it and the machine. If the tech is better or goes to the other side of the line instead of inside the line of the sac or whatever it can make the measurements change. I would also tend to agree with your dr that the machine at the RE office is probably better and they probably do them more often. Try not to worry to much and just enjoy being pregnant . That is nice they are seeing you in 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your encouragement! I do have some good news. I called my RE after my OB appointment on Friday and explained what happened. They said their equipment is much better than most OB's (which is why we go to specialists for the big scans). But they said after everything I've gone through this year, they completely understood my panic and let me come in Saturday morning for one last RE scan. Baby was perfect and was measuring 8 weeks 6 days so clearly growing on track (by lmp i would have been 9 weeks that day). I'm feeling much better!

I'm glad they got you back in and everything measures exactly where it should. I missed this thread (sorry!) when you posted originally. I would have agreed with the ladies.

I had an experience last in my 2nd pregnancy with a "new" doctor in the rotation. He said I was measuring 4 weeks behind (at 32 weeks, measuring 28)...so he went and got the ultrasound machine and sure enough, measuring me at 28 weeks. I was in total panic. He said, "Well, let's confirm with the sonographer. I'll call over."

He sent me over, I waited in panic for 2 hours....unable to understand how a baby could shrink. As soon as the sonograph turned on the machine and measured the first measurement (you know you see the weeks/days go up as they stretch the line out) she went to 32w1d...exactly what I was. She said the in office scans are not nearly as detailed or high tech as theirs.

So happy to hear you had the same happy result that I did. ((HUGS)) I'm sorry for the worry it put you though!
