So I was induced on Saturday morning, we had a few complications: ZoŽ's heart rate kept going down during contractions, when they broke my water it was stained with maconium (that thick tar like poop that babies have when they're 1st born) which she was exposed to at birth, my blood pressure bottomed out after the epidural which made me nauseous and they gave me meds to raise it which sent it through the roof. But I did have a much smoother and faster labor than my previous two kids were...and ZoŽ arrived @ 1:50 pm. She is tiny at 6lbs 2 oz and 17 inches long at birth. And after they got ZoŽ out they realized what was causing her heart rate to go down...the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck...and the other side of the cord broke off from the placenta leaving the placenta inside me and as high as it could possibly be in my uterus (my husband was shocked how far up me my dr was getting to try and retrieve it ) and my dr was about to take me for an emergency D & C, but managed to finally get it out (piece by piece) at the last minute. Dale (hubby) didn't know which way to turn as they had a team working on ZoŽ at the same time for her maconium exposure. I got to hold her a few minutes before they took her to the nursery and put her on oxygen as she was only getting 80% air saturation and they were worried about her possibly getting pneumonia from the marconium in her lungs. She finally got off oxygen yesterday afternoon around 3, but they thought she was looking jaundiced, but thankfully her levels never got high enough to need treatment. She's doing great now and we're finally home!! And now my milk came in so we're dealing with engorgement...it just never ends.

here are some pics...

She is so precious! Congratulations!

When I delivered Reagan, she had meconium in her bag of waters as well, she too was in the NICU - luckily just as a precaution, they put her on antibiotics to make sure if she had gotten any inside her lungs that they could fight any possible infection, she didn't. Very glad that Zoe is doing so well! She is adorable

thanks everyone...she is a lot smaller than I expected and I can't get over how much she looks like her brother.

They kept telling me she had aspirated the meconium...that it was the thickest meconium they have ever seen and they were surprised at how well she was doing. She didn't go to NICU or do antibiotics...they just treated her with oxygen and monitoring...but poor baby looks like a little junkie from all the bruises on her from when they tried to give her an IV...they never managed to get it in though.

Anyway the specialist told us though that she didn't have a true meconium aspiration but that she may have breathed in some meconium, but not like the nurses in the nursery were telling us...she said if that had happened that she would have been really sick. I kind of wonder if her meconium being so thick was a blessing in disguise and was too thick for her to aspirate it completely.

Congratulations! She is an adorable baby girl!

Sorry to hear about your complications, but be glad that your epidural was still in when the doc went in to pull out your placenta... take it from me, that is really not fun to experience without medication.

It's funny you mention that because all the nurses kept asking if the epidural was still working and my doctor answered for me, "Trust me it is"...as she was in almost up to her shoulders trying to get out that placenta.
