Marsi was an absolute champ today. We got there at about 1:30 for our 2:00 appointment because we had to go through paperwork. The first thing that happened was an EKG. Everything with that was normal. The cardiologist definitely heard the murmur the pediatrition was hearing. We decided to chance having an echochardiogram without sedation because it was Marsi's nap time. She was such a champ through it! They were able to complete the whole thing (about an hour) without any sedation!! When they were done with that, we got the diagnosis. Patent ductus arteriosus. In order to figure out the importance of when it needed to be fixed, we needed to see if her heart was getting enlarged. They found that out through chest x-ray. This showed that her heart was already getting enlarged and that the problem needed to be fixed pretty soon. With everything that was told us, we opted for surgery. We don't know when it is going to be. The surgeon is going to call to make the appointment. Because of that we needed her to have her blood typed and tested so she had to give blood today too. She did so well through all of this. It is heart breaking, but I am glad we caught it early and it can be fixed.

I'm glad she did so well!

Do you know what type of surgery?

My oldest son had heart surgery at 15 months old, it was all done through the leg, pretty amazing.

I'll be keeping you guys in my prayers, it is so scary when it comes to our kids.

We chose laproscopy rather than catheter for a variety of reasons. It is going to be a 2 inch incision on her back where they will get to the area through her ribs.

What a scary thing to have to go through. I'm glad they caught it early and that you have a plan to fix it. Will she be in the hospital for long after the surgery?

I'm glad that she did so well yesterday. I also want to say that you are a strong woman, it's scary to have your kid go through surgery when they are so young. I'm happy that they caught it early. Keep us posted on her surgery.
How long will be surgery be?

Glad it went well but about the surgery. It sounds like a fairly simply surgery so I hope it is quick and she isn't in a lot of pain.
I cannot imagine my little ones having any kind of surgery.
HUGS!!

Oh Rachel, I am sorry that she is sick. I hate to see any baby or child with any type of problem. I am just glad that it can be fixed. I'll keep her in my prayers if that is ok with you.

I am glad that the appointment went well and you have a plan in action to correct the problem. T&P the surgery goes perfectly when it happens. I know that would be scary.
