I tested positive for Group B strep with this pregnancy. Which seems odd because I never have before.

I know this means I'll need IV antibiotics during labor. But I was wondering what other people's experiences have been.

Do they take your baby for observation if you have it? What if you don't get the full dose of antibiotics before the baby is born? Is there a risk to infecting the baby after birth at all?

I plan on asking my doctor at my next appointment but was wondering what others have experienced.

I was positive with my son. With. Ydaughter, I was negative but they gave me the antibiotics anyway. It doesnt affect how they treat the baby.

With Moose, I was negative. With Fnn, I was positive. (And because Finn was early, I hadn't gotten the Group B test dobne in time. They had to hurry and do it after my water broke. Found out I was positive.) So, I got immediate IV meds, whatever and they ran the entire time I was in labor. It didn't effect me in any negative ways. But, our hospital had the policy that any Strep B positive born babies have to stay 48 hours. For both baby and mother. So, we stayed 2 nights, versus one.

My main concern is if I don't get the four hours (or however long) of antibiotics what that will mean for my baby (observation? special care nursery for antibiotics?).

With my last labor, we left for the hospital when I was sure I was in proper active labor rather than early labor. I was there only 3 hours before my older daughter was born. My early labor lasts a long time, so I don't want to go too early, but I don't want to get there too late for a full dose of penicillin.

I had it with 7 of my ten kids. They just made sure we got several doses before my kids were born. I was induced everytime so I had plenty of time to get the meds before they were born. They shouldn't do anything different with your kiddo regarless unless they seem to start showing signs of infection. Just make sure your very verbal with your doc and your nursing staff about your concerns, you should be ok.

I had it with Jacob and they wanted me to get in two bags of antibiotics before he was born. We had to stay in the hospital for 48 hours since I was positive. I think even without antibiotics it is rare that it will harm baby but check with your dr and see what he says. I know for me that was part of the reason I wanted to be induced to make sure I got all the antibiotics I needed.

I talked with my doctor and she said that I would need two bags of antibiotics 4 hours apart before the baby is born and then we'd stay 48-hours after birth (so no early discharge). She said that I should go in to L&D when I still am in the "maybe this is it?" stage rather than waiting to be certain I'm in active labor.
