Just wondering if anybody has ever had a shot of lidocaine during labor to help with the pain of pushing the baby out. I saw my dr this morning and was talking to him about natural childbirth and he said that if I needed he could give me a shot of lidocaine somewhere in the vaginal area and it would help with the pain of pushing. I had never heard of this, just wondering if anybody else has heard of it.

Well, no I haven't. BUT, I was having topical pain around my c-sec scar during my periods awhile back and my doc gave me lidocaine gel to put on the scar. It's a topical anesthesia and doesn't last long, but it worked for me to help me get to sleep when I had bad pain.

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to use it. They'd probably spray the area to numb it and then inject some into the tissue - more than likely so you don't feel the tearing.

A lidocaine shot in the vagina before the baby comes out? I have never seen that and I work in Labor and Delivery. In my opinion... I don't think that would do very much. Of course, if there is any tears the doctor will use lidocaine after while suturing.

I think going unmedicated is really something you have to mentally prepare for. The women who come in prepared and very set on a natural child birth do very well. The ones who "wait and see" never make it unmedicated.
