Okay, so first off; my DH totally swears he hates dogs. Never has anything to do with them, and he's fixed a LOT of furniture that has been demolished by inside dogs. We talked a long time ago about it and compromised that we would get a large, outside only dog when we had somewhere to keep one.
We moved a couple months ago into our new house that has a little over an acre plot on it and a nice little side yard you can put a dog into.
Well, the last thing I'd ever think he'd get me as a gift is a dog, but he completely surprised me and took me out to a doghouse he had built while I was at work on Christmas eve with a little puppy in it. I mean he regularly says all sorts of mean things about dogs and how much he dislikes them. He's never been mean to any dog though. He just ignores them/pushes them away from him. It's just not something I'd ever think he'd go through the effort of doing. He is so sweet to me.
So here she is. Meet Macey (Mace). I'm so stinking excited about it!!
And here's a pic of the yard/house she's in.
I've added some insulation and bedding into the doghouse now that I've had a chance to go get stuff for it. Have to keep the little girl warm at night. I also go check on her every time I wake up to make sure she's warm enough/doing okay. Sorry this got kind of long, but I'm excited!
She's a mixed breed. They said she's a lab/great Pyrenees mix. She's gonna be a BIG dog. Right now she can curl up in my lap. Don't know how much longer that will last, but I'm enjoying it right now. The last 2 nights when I check on her she curls up in my lap and snuggles and sleeps. It's precious.
Beautiful little doggie, I love her name! What an awesome gift!
If you are worried about her house being too cold, maybe you could put a heat lamp in? I have one for my chickens and all it needs is a place to hang from and an extension cord. I'm not sure how cold it gets where you are, though so it could be entirely unnecessary.
I love her house! He did a really great job getting that ready as a surprise. I hope you have many happy years together!
Anna: I've been thinking about that. I've got it pretty well insulated for now so I'll see how she does on the next really cold night. I check on her a lot. After this year I know she'll be okay, but I'm just worried with her being so young that she wouldn't be able to stay as warm. With all the bedding I put in there she has plenty to burrow down in now though. I even put in a cheap sleeping bag under her dog bed (which is pretty warm itself) so it'll keep out any updrafts through the bottom of the dog house. The other thing I think I'll do is find something to make a doggy door type thing for it. After I do that I think the house should stay really warm for her. I'll still check on her to make sure for a while though. Just trying to figure out what to use for the door.
