My mom needs to have a heart valve replacement surgery, sometime in the next month. We knew for a long time that one of her valves was failing, so having surgery was just a matter of when, not if. But after an EKG last week her doctors determined it needs to happen soon. She'll have a heart catheterization on Monday to scope out exactly what's going on, and then they'll schedule the surgery.

I'm going to go be there during her surgery- my parents live about 3 hours from me.

I'm trying to keep it together, but I'm scared. It's my mom. My mom has been there so much for me during the last year, with my 3 losses. What if she doesn't get to meet my baby girl?

Update 2/9/14

My mom's heart catheterization this past week went well- there are no blockages, so that will reduce complications. And she has her surgery scheduled for February 25. I'm glad- we thought it might be later in March. She's sick of waiting, and doesn't want to be struggling to recover when my baby is due (the recovery process is about 6 weeks). She is in very good spirits, and we're all just looking forward.

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts. My dad has gone thru several heart surgeries and I know how scary it can be. My dad raised me and I can't even bear to think of losing him right now.

Oh I'm so sorry. I'm sure your very nervous, anxious, scared. I would be too if it were my mom. It's very scary to have someone you love go through something like that. I'll say some prayers for her. Let us know when the surgery will be.

I am glad the first part went well and you have a surgery date. Not long to wait. When Marsi had surgery, the hardest part was the wait before it.

I'm so sorry to hear your family is having to go through this, but I am happy to hear that things are going well so far.

My family just recently went through this exact same type of thing with my dad after a sudden heart attack. Everything went really well with him, and I am sure it will for your mom, too! Find comfort in the fact that, thankfully, the heart is one area in which medicine has come such an incredibly long way and the things they can do are outright AMAZING when it comes to the heart. I am sure she will be feeling great in no time after her surgery.

It's always scary, but these surgeries are better these days than every before. A very dear friend of ours just had major heart surgery (double bypass) at the age of 80 and 5 days later he was riding his bike. Another good friend of ours had triple bypass at the age of 67 three years ago and today she's swimming, hiking and walking several miles a day.

Have faith and stay positive!

Glad that there were no blockages and that your mom is in good spirits. I think your mindset has so much do to with recovery time. I hope all goes well on the 25th. I'll be praying for a fast recovery.
