So the client I used to work for at my job contacted me independently and offered me a work at home, part time job!!!!!

BIG problem. The hours are HORRIBLE! The hours are scattered throughout the day because I'd be training people over the phone. Three days a week I'd have to get full day day care for 3 - 4 hours of work. I can't afford that. The other two days I'd have to get day care for the middle of the day only, and find someone to pick up DS1 from camp.

I had to turn it down. I feel SO BAD! I really wanted the job.

Bummer! Did they say anything when you turned it down? Can they work with you on the hours?

Well that stinks. Sounds like they need someone who doesn't have kids. It's hard to work crazy hours when you've got kids.

That was just the thing - the supervisor that I spoke to knows I have kids and said, "Even if you can work half the hours, that would be great. But the hours are SO scattered. Mon, Wed and Fri there is a training for 1 hour at 11 AM. Mon and Wed, another 30 min training at 12:45. Wed and Thur there is another one hour training at 1:15.

Sure, I can pick any of those hours, but all daycare facilities charge by the week, so I'm gonna pay whether my kid is there or not. All the friends and family I have in the area can't dedicate hodge-podge hours like that.

I haven't heard back from there. This is all happening via email.

Oh man Leia that sucks. Instead of sending them to daycare, could you hire someone for just that little bit of time? Thinking about it, I guess that wouldn't make financial sense either. I hope you can find a solution or another job soon.

Therese, I thought of that too. I had someone lined up to watch Colt when I went back to work, but when I was laid off, I told her I didn't need her and she took another position. In two weeks, she's going to be home with her kids for the summer and won't be available.

That's the other issue. In two weeks, it's summer break for us and many of my friends who watch kids will have their own kids in tow. I can't have a bunch of kids at my house while I work - and I need someone to watch Colt here, because he's still breastfeeding. UGH! Seems impossible.

Update! The company really wants to work with me in some capacity so I'm picking up just 4 hours. I cobbled together my MIL for 2 hours and a friend for 2 hours for the next 2 weeks. After that, I may switch to a different position and have to change the hours again, but we'll address that after that. But for the next two weeks, I have something.

I feel good about this because it's a foot in the door. I want to maintain a relationship with this company - they are a good company and even if I work just a few hours here and there, eventually I will go back to work and they would be a great choice.

Got another call from the company and they referred me for consulting work to the new company that took over support (which is why I lost my job in the first place). They've contacted me about consulting work with them!

Then my OLD boss called me for consulting work with them in the fall.

Now I've got THREE jobs!!!!

Wow! So glad things are looking up! I hope you can figure out all the logistics with watching Colt. Seems like a great line of prospects.
