My good friend is scheduled for her 2nd C Section a week from today (friday). Her husband changed jobs a month ago and so they needed to go on Cobra while he was in the 90day waiting period to get on his new company's insurance. Finally after weeks of hearing nothing from his last company about signing up for Cobra, my friend called yesterday to get things straightened out. She came over yesterday crying and stressed out because apparently his old company was too small to offer Cobra and so now her delivery, her hospital stay and everything else will now have to come out of pocket! Her dr said a normal vaginal delivery, not including any hospital stay or anything costs over $3k, but a C Section is much higher than that! And heaven forbid the baby needs to be in NICU, they would have to cover the baby's bills too! What a mess! They dont qualify for state insurance because he makes too much and even if they did, maternity isnt covered anyway! Its not fair that this happened to her at the end of the pregnancy! She is already so hormonal and overwhelmed about everything else! It makes me so mad- I dont understand how illegal immigrants can just show up at the hospital and wont be turned away, but my friend who pays taxes has to come up with all of this out of pocket! What a mess!
