I was a freshman in college. Had just gotten back from my first class of the day. My roommate meets me in the hall as she's closing (and locking) the door behind her. She tells me what happens - just the first plane at that time. She walks away to her first class, and leaves me frantically trying to unlock our dorm room door, with tears welling in my eyes. I have to get to my phone. I have to call my mom to see what's going on. (my dad is an airline pilot that flies in and out of the east coast about 6-8 times a week) I turned on the tv, and tried to call out to her, but of course, the phones weren't working. I hadn't heard what airline it was yet - so I had to just sit on the floor and watch all the footage until they finally said it was an American airlines flight (my dad is a pilot for USAirways, so at that point I knew he was more than likely safe, even though he does ride on other airlines every so often when he has to commute). It wasn't until the afternoon that I was finally able to get ahold of my mom on my cell phone. She told me Dad was ok - but he was in Washington DC when the plane hit the pentagon - he actually saw the smoke from up in the air. There was no way for him to get home since they closed down all the airports, and everyone had rented all the cars from the rental places. He and two of the flight attendants from his plane had to rent a Budget truck and drove from Wash DC back to Missouri that night. I'm so glad my dad is alright, I can't imagine what we would have done had he not been. But I always get so emotional thinking about it, because I an remember all the feelings I had that morning when I didn't know what was going on with him for hours on end.
