Sounds like American House spiders:
Parasteatoda tepidariorum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They're not aggressive, but who wants a gajillion spiderlings running around? Most of those spiderlings will eat each other within the next couple days, but still.
We're a pretty spider-friendly house, and usually let a couple of these spiders hang out (especially if they're earning their keep by eating ants, etc). But the key to keeping them out is to keep a well-swept house. Don't let them set up shop in a web because the females will eventually pop out an egg sack, and then you'll have the billions of babies to deal with again. If I see an egg sack, I remove it from the web and destroy it. But a female can pop out several egg sacks from any one fertilization, so you have to keep on top of it.
More than you wanted to know, right?
