I posted this in the BFing forum, too, but am desperate here, ladies!! My nipples began hurting when DS latched on about 2 wks ago and I've thoroughly washed my bras in hot water, airing them out, taking probiotics, and even gentian violet, but to no avail! Anyone know of natural remedies to cure a yeast infection of the nipples? His ped checked for thrush but said he was clear ...

What else could it be? I just assumed it is because they began hurting out of the blue ...

Are your nipples itchy, or burning and appear shiny, red, flakly and or have a rash with tiny blisters? If so it is most certainly thrush, if not it might be the fact that he is teething. Sometimes baby nurse differently when they are teething, they just start doing it out of the blue and it can cause pain, it is a temporary discomfort, you could give him something cold to chew on before nursing to numb his gums.

I was just posting about sore nipples on the FB group! In my case I know it's not yeast because I'm one month into a three-month course of anti-fungal meds (for a different problem).

My best guess is that Hunter's lower teeth scrape my nipple sometimes. That, or there could be a crack I can't see. Does it help if you nurse Zayd in a different position (e.g. lying down instead of cradling?). If so, that might tell you it's not yeast.

Hoping you get some relief. Sore nipples are miserable!

PS - I can't believe how big Zayd is! What a cutie!

Thanks Smashie!! :-)

So I visited my midwife & she said I def didn't have a yeast problem. She asked if i had consumed more caffeine than usual & I sure had. She explained that caffeine cause the breast to retain morr water & basically "swell" inside. She asked that I cut out caffeine again & take 600 iu of Vit E, & lo 'n behold, theyre no longer hurting!

good to hear it was not yeast, however i did have a mild yeast infection when victoria was 3 mo old. my dr told me to take plain black tea bag and wash my nipple with it every time i nursed and then let it air dry. there is something in the tea that kills the yeast and is completely harmless you and the baby. it worked like a charm.
