If you live in an area that has civil defense sirens or tornado sirens, when they go off how do you react? Do you take shelter no questions asked or do you stand outside on the porch and watch the clouds (or from a window)?

We moved her 5 years ago from Washington DC so the sirens were a new concept to me. I have to say that I was scared to death of the storms here. I used to practically live in our basement! I can barely hear the sirens in our house. Sometimes I hear them or think I do and it is just cloudy so I don't go to the basement anymore. I'll open the door to listen and check the weather stations to see what is happening. If there is something in our area then yes, I'll head below with the kiddos but not like before!

I check the news first to see if there's REALLY something to be worried about. Only once in 4 years have we truly had to head to the basement. But for the most part I'm on my front stoop checking it all out

99% of the time I am already watching the weather, I am a nerd like that so the sirens never really surprise me. The only time they would is if it was in the middle of the night. We also have one of those weather alarms so it warns me faster than the news does.

If the power is on then we are glued to the TV to see if we should really take cover or not. I've lived here almost 6 years and the tornado sirens have only gone off twice and both times we were watching from our balcony. When I lived at the farm and had no choice other then a radio to listen to, we would huddle under the basement steps.
