Hi Everyone!

Sorry I've been MIA a lot... I tend to forget this section exists...

My DH has been laid off again and we are now looking for a new job for him.. again. The high tech sector around here is so unstable and with so many people constantly being laid off it's really saturated with people looking for jobs...

so anyways... DH may have a good lead for a job in Markham... I've looked at the mls website and we cannot afford Markham... but we can afford Oshawa... which or course makes me wonder.. what's wrong with Oshawa? why are the houses cheap enough that we can afford living there? lol

I'm a licensed Realtor, and I haven't heard anything bad about Oshawa. I know the further away from Toronto you get the better the prices as well. I have been quite a few times to Oshawa, it seems nice enough. Sorry to hear about your DH getting laid off..ugh!

I live in Peterborough but travel to Oshawa for shopping and my husband knows the city.

I would suggest looking into different parts of the city because some parts are pretty rough while others are just gorgeous.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband being laid off. I hope you can work something out.

Hey Vero! Oshawa is nice, but try Pickering! We are living in North York now but are moving to Pickering sometime next year.

I miss Ottawa!

It's cheaper there because it's further outside the city. Better Oshawa then Whitby is what I think.

I don't know much about Ontario, but I know that most of the housing in Ontario is WAY cheaper than it is in Vancouver! We have to move, this place is WAY TO EXPENSIVE!

Well I just looked at the real estate in my town and it has CRASHED, so there is no way we can move anywhere really... I don't know...

As far as Pickering goes, I'm pretty sure we cannot afford it there, I did radius search around Markham of about 1 hour travel, and the only things we can afford are in Oshawa and Lake Simcoe area...

These past few years we have just started getting out of a bad financial situation, bought our first house and when I got laid of from work over a year ago, we made the decision I would stay home... So between all of these factors, the GTA may just not be the right place for us...

I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens.

oh and Michelle I wanted to add: ahhhh your girls are looking so grown up!! I miss living in Kanata. I love my house here a lot more, but I miss the trails and the proximity to stuff in Kanata...

I can tell you in this part of Ontario, Windsor up to Sarnia area houses are CHEAP. We might end up buying one around here in ten years or so. Want to get debts off our backs and I want to go to school and have little debt, etc. Will see what happens.

I ditto about Oshawa, depends on the area.

I went to school in Oshawa and lived in Durham Region most of my life.

Oshawa is fine... EXCEPT for south Oshawa. Anywhere around the GM plant... no good. My grandma lives in North Oshawa around Wilson and Rossland Road, it's a great area.

I know alot of people that hate Oshawa, but I've never found anything wrong with it. You may want to stay away from the area directly around Taunton and Simcoe as well... as it is a big college area and full of partiers.

Another area to try that's not too far from Markham that (from what I can recall) was fairly inexpensive is Uxbridge. Also Claremont, Brougham (which is basically North Pickering, but small little towns). ummmm... Brooklin (which is basically North Whitby) and Port Perry... ya, but Anyway... long story short, Oshawa is fine. lol.

Oh... one other area... not too far from Markham is Aurora. My friend lived there for a few years and it was fairly inexpensive as well.

^You hit the nail on the head. Whenever someone asks me that knows Oshawa where my mom lives, I say Glen St and they always go "Ohhh thats a BAD area". It really is. I went to the school in the area in gr 7 & 8 and moved back to Peterborough.
