We should have moved out of this crappy province when we had the chance. I hate it here.

The reason I said that I hate BC is because the recession is not the cause of the lay offs, the first one happened a year before the recession and the second one happened at the beginning of this year. Both times he's gotten laid off in last 3 years is because of the high Canadian dollar. Both those companies rely on selling their products to americans and when the dollar went up americans stopped buying. He had troubles finding a job in Vancouver before we moved away from there too. The reason he's being threatened now is because it's winter and people don't want to do home renos in the winter. The company he works for is a home improvement company. I've hated BC for a while now and I'm hating it more and more everyday.

I'm sorry Patricia! Have you guys considered moving away? Is that an option at all for you guys? What does your DH currently do? I noticed you said he wanted to be a Police Officer? What is holding that up? I know in Manitoba they were very recently CRYING for recruits.

Move to Ontario. We have OPP, RCMP and local police! Lots to choose from.

Patricia yes the city has it's own force (Winnipeg) and there are a lot of opportunities especially for someone with a technical background. I know my husband is a journeyman welder as well and this helped immensely in him getting hired on at the local fire department.
I know a lot of people in BC in the same boat as you guys. I am originally from there. It is sad. I have had several sets of friends move to Manitoba over the last two years for many of the same reasons you mention.

I hope things turn around for you guys!

I'm so tempted! Houses in Ontario and Manitoba are incredibly inexpensive! Just from taking a glance at the realtor website, we could get an actual house (not a townhouse like we have now) with 3 or 4 bedrooms and 2 or 3 bathrooms, at least 1500 sq ft in winnipeg for less than we paid for our 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 900 sq ft townhouse that is badly in need of renovations. I wonder what property takes are like?

They vary by area of course but generally inexpensive. Where we live which is a small city about 40 minutes from Winnipeg we bought property, built a brand new 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom, full basement, decent sized fenced yard house in family oriented neighborhood and fully furnished it for under 160,000. Unheard of most places. It would be slightly higher in Winnipeg. Our property taxes when we lived in Winnipeg in a great neighborhood comparable sized house were around 2200 a year. Here they are half that!

That's even better than what we were looking at in Alberta!

Yup. I am from BC but would not consider going back because of the cost of living. Even though DH makes a great amount of money as a journeyman our standard of living would go WAY down if we left here. I'm not down with that lol. So I brave the brutal winters and enjoy a pretty comfy lifestyle despite the icky weather!
