Just a quick question about this. A lady I know mentioned(a few weeks ago) that she'd heard we are getting the money all at once in a big cheque. I hadn't heard that before, but I was reading an article today about it and it was talking about them being $1200 cheques.

Does anyone know if it is monthly pmts or lump sum?

Also, I know it talks about under 6 but is that 6 and under or is that 5 and under?

I got this from the Revenue Canada Official Website

There in question and answer type form:

Is the Universal Child Care Benefit a taxable benefit?
Under proposed legislation, the Universal Child Care Benefit will be taxable income and reportable as income.

Go here for more information:

yep, it is crap. my friend here in winnipeg works at the tax center dealing with this type of stuff.

Child Tax Credit is a bunch of credits put in one federal payment to you. The Harper government is taking out one of the little credits that is about $20/month from that. So, lets say next year you are suppose to get the full $240+$100/month you will be getting the $220+$100. But now that this $100 must be reported at the end of the year, it pretty much works out depending on your tax bracket of only getting really $40 extra per month. Plus on top of that, this extra $1200+ depending on how many children you have, will be bumping up a lot of families into a higher tax bracket so they will be taxed more at the end of the year. Its really a no win situation for most. The NDP is really pissed that 1) the harper govt is taking away some of the $ in child tax and 2 ) that this new $1200 is taxed.

yes the whole taxing it and having it included as income issue is going to hurt so many people. I do wish there was a way we could refuse it.

Question: I applied for the CTB but got a letter back saying we're not eligible due to our family income. I assume I still get the Harper $$ (I hope!) as they know I have a child since I filled out the CTB application. Am I right??

Yes you will get it. The money is for everyone in Canada with a child under 6. We also don't get CTB but we will get the "Harper $$".

Brandy even though your family income is high, they don't take into consideration that you have 4 kids?? Dam, I thought eventually I'd be getting the CTB when we have more kids but I guess not!

At least I get the Harper $$ though!

sheesh... i didn't know it was taxed either! we aren't getting a lot from the CTB so the extra $100 was a nice addition BUT now that it's being taxed... it really won't be!
