Anyone have any idea the cost of a crown?

Last week, I had a regular checkup at the dentist. Everything was fine, but they marked two of my teeth to 'watch' for crowns in the future. One they commented was very fragile (large cavity and a root canal already).

Wouldn't you know, it BROKE today. I was holding half a tooth in my hand.

So they are planning to put a crown on it on Tuesday.

I have dental benefits, but they'll only cover 50% for crowns. I can't find anything Canadian specific on Google...does anyone have any ideas what range I may be looking at for this?

Oh man, that sucks Jess. Usually if you call the dentist they will let you know how much to expect it to be. If you have a dentistry school near you, they will charge much less for the work. My MIL always goes down to TO to one of the schools of dentistry to have her work done.

My dentist that I have gone to for my ENTIRE life is retiring I could either have an appointment on Friday with the new guy, or on Tuesday with him. I chose Tuesday. He is a dental surgeon specialist. My mom goes to a periodentist (spelling?!) and they knew as soon as they looked in her mouth that he was our dentist, and they went on and on about his work...so I'd rather have one last thing done by him before he retires given he is so skilled. It just sucks that this happened right as I was planning for Christmas. Based on all the googling I did, all I could find was "somewhere between $1,000 and $3,500"...that's a pretty wide range!

That's cool that your dentist is so highly thought of. Good luck with the appointment.

First of all I have to say, that when I read the title and then hovered my curser all I got was "Anyone have any idea the cost of a crown?" I was wondering why on earth you were buying a crown and if some kid in your life was getting an awesome present! Thinking of the kind that goes on the Queen's head, not one for your tooth!

Now that said, wow crowns are expensive! I hope when you get there you find out they are actually less than that because even with 50% for your benefits that's a lot to have to pay out of pocket!

So, my dentist rebuilt the tooth again. So no crown at the moment. But I am going back for x-rays next week to see how this rebuild is settling in, and then those are getting sent to a gum specialist, and I have to go see the gum specialist, and then they will determine IF they can even crown it. This is ridiculous! And then its a waiting game for the tooth to break again till they crown it. We have been trying to save this tooth since I was 8 years old. I think its time to just let it go!!! At the same time, I'm glad there's not an added big expense while on mat leave.
