What do you think about the cessation of the use of the penny? Starting Feb 4, Tim Hortons rounds to the nearest nickle and I think some others are following suit shortly.

I'd be ok paying an extra couple cents to not have to carry around so many **** pennies! I think in general it's a good thing to get rid of. I see no issues with prices at stores/restaurants rounded up or down accordingly.

OK, here's my thing. Even if stores round their prices to the nearest nickle, after you add tax it still won't be rounded! Stores might as well leave the prices at what they are and just round after taxes are added.

Otherwise, I really don't care if we have pennies or not. Although I am loosing how I bribe my kids. DD2 is starting to grow out of it but in 6 months or so DS would be at the right age to bribe with pennies.

I don't mind the thought of it at all, but that is a very good point about the taxes! I was just assuming that the rounding would be done after taxes.

I thought it was after taxes too! Oh my, is that ever silly!

On the news the other day, they were saying some places with old-school tills may have to completely replace the till to accommodate the switch since some people don't trust cashiers to provide the correct change manually

It will be weird not having pennies, but then again, I almost always use cards, so it doesn't really affect me.

I didn't realize they would be rounding up before taxes. I saw at Starbucks yesterday that they'll be rounding up or down to the nickel too. They said payments by card won't be affected by the change.

Caroline, you can still bribe your little guy with pennies. He'll never know they're worthless. Besides, I think stores will still accept them, even if they don't hand them out anymore.

I'm totally fine with the penny going, if there's a difference it'll be so small we won't even notice.
